Aside from the execution, a good reason to label shelves would be if someone is helping you clean up, they might not know where things go. And, as INCHBRANCH said, if the tiles were mounted on the front of the shelves, they wouldn't be in the way.

Nice. I love the green and white. We're taking a similar approach to our kitchen redo—very slow, partly because of budget and partly because we're doing it ourselves and trying to fit it into our schedules. We also have no master plan, so time is also necessary for making decisions.

On the other hand, if it said, "Eat, bubbeleh," I might consider it.

When my kids were very little we had two adjacent apartments in NYC, with just a rough hole between them (no door, no frame). All their friends were impressed.

On the other hand, my son always preferred to go to the apartment of friends of his, not because it was bigger and nicer (which it was), but because the babysitter allowed them to take all the cushions off the couches and jump on them.

About the caulk—we just moved our cabinets 4" up, and put molding on top to connect them with the ceiling. My husband said not to worry too much about caulking it, because wood shifts around (shrinks and expands) and the caulk would end up gapping anyway.
