Great apartment & that floor is gorgeous! I've never seen that before.

On a side note: Is Marsha originally from south Jersey? I think I went to high school with her (class of '76).

Not sure. Last fall I painted my bathroom red and I have to say it's an idea that was much better in theory. I've been waiting for open window weather to paint it something else.

I'm a photographer and sell my pictures at craft shows - a few of my images are of windows with little still life arrangements on the sills and people are always buying them for windowless nooks and offices.

I live in a coop that started off as a rental, as a result it has horrible, ugly tiling that I haven't been able to replace yet. The worst is the floor which is grey, porous tile that is impossible to get to look clean.

Because I'm in a coop, I hesitate to retile myself (if I don't do it right and it leaks and damages downstairs apartments I'd be responsible.) Also, underneath the wall tile is cement covered mesh, not board, so I've been told that type of underwall is too complicated to deal with for a DIYer. Is that true?

I've thought of painting the tiles, but is there a kind of paint that looks good and is durable (& cleanable) for painting over ceramic tiles?

I love the look (and what one can do with) the Malm dressers, but I have hesitated to buy any because of the smells that accompany IKEA furniture. The last piece I bought, my desk, took over a month for the chemical smell (formaldehyde, I think) to start to dissipate, and there is still (months later) a chemical smell emanating from it.

Having that with a desk is one thing, but for a dresser that would be full of clothes, I'd like to know about the health effects of that - as well as hear about solutions for it.

I think this one is my favorite. I'm not familiar with the Sears Kit Home. Does this mean the original builders bought a kit & built it themselves? I'd love to see what the outside looks like.

Love the color. And I think you have convinced me to get an Elfa system! I didn't think it could hold so much weight. My only question is, what do you do to keep your clothes from getting dusty?

I'd say paint the walls the color green that copper turns (Statue of Liberty color).

I once saw a ball picther, at ther now defunct 6th Avenue Antique Flea Market, that was unlike any I'd ever seen before: It had slightly indented polka dots in vintage fiestaware colors (And I collect vintage Fiesta). It was $65, which at the time was a lot because I'd been laid off from my job. So I walked around to think about it & when I got back it was gone. I've never seen one before of since. I still kick myself about that.

But truthfully, more than that pitcher, I miss that old flea market and the charming Chelsea neighborhood that was, (before all the over-development and yuppie scum took over) more than that pitcher. I'm guessing someone is cherishing that pitcher, at least, but the neighborhood where one could spend a lovely weekend rumaging for treasures has been obliterated.

You'd be surprised at what you can grow in those containers. A friend has just 2 tomato plants in a retangular container, and is getting tons of huge tomatos.

I bought my first home, a co-op in Manhattan, about 18 years ago. It was the best financial decision I've ever made. I've built up equity and gotten yearly tax deductions.

Most importantly: If I had not bought an apartment when I did, I would not still be able to afford to live in NYC. My mortgage & maintenance are less than half of what I'd have to spend on a rental of the same size.

When renting you are always at the mercy of your landlord, and you can never customize your living space the way you want too.

Of course you have to think before you buy - duh - but that doesn't mean that home owndership is a bad thing. Not by a long shot.

Your friend is complaining about how hard it is to save for college for his two kids: He should consider himself lucky - there are a lot of people who cannot afford to even have kids in the first place.

The color is about photography and setting off the actors against it.

But one thing I haven't see anyone mention: That big bookcase that is by Carrie's front door, they used to have at ABC Carpet & Home. It was $2400, and didn't come apart into pieces, and there is no way in hell that that bookcase could ever have been brought into a walkup apartment, like the one she lived in.

They aren't just knocking off big, old, monied companies: They are also knocking off living, working artisans.

Target has been cited, in the past, for attending art festivals, buying craft items, then sending those items to China to be mass produced, then sold in their stores - WITHOUT the permission of the artisans who created the originals.

Those of you who don't actually create anything, I'm sure, think that's fine. You are selfish and self centered and think that you should have anything you want just because you want it, and if you don't have the money, then stealing is fine.

But those of us who are artists and artisans, and make our livings from the designs we create, no that stealing is stealing is stealing. Period. Why can't I just walk into Bloomingdales and walk out with a Fendi bag? Afterall, I want it. Why shouldn't I have it? I'm entitled to have everything I want without paying, right?

Oh, and those who use the rationalization that the designers of the older designs have already made enough, and so it's OK to steal; who are YOU to say how much is enough for them to earn from THEIR intellectual property?

Dark floors won't neccessarily make the room look smaller, but dark floors will show every spec of dust, so you will have to vacum a lot more often (like every day).

Someone told me that before I got a black countertop in my kitchen. I wish I had listened.
