A great renovation/update. Nice, simple and bright. Love it!

Before & After: A Laundry Room is Born

I like the two country living spaces and the lonny space. I think the key is to accessorize/style so that the highlight of the room is not the stripes - it just makes a great backdrop. The two country living spaces use a feature with a bright, fun color as an attention grabber (turquoise chandelier and green sofa).

So true. I recently shared a quick pic with my phone of a scene from my apt (http://blog.17thandriggs.com/) and although I thought it was a horrible corner, after I saw the picture I found it slightly less so... I think the room was overwhelming me and making it difficult to see the individual bright spots. I think this is a wonderful exercise in looking for the interesting/positive around us.

Learning to Love Your Home: Take an Apartment Journey

I run my online business (contemporary furniture retail) from home and find it extremely challenging. What makes it more difficult is sacrificing work space in order to live and living space in order to work... to the point that neither is exactly what I want them to be. It is tricky getting perspective on my existing space in thinking of creative ways to make it more conducive for work but also a home that feels great to be in!

I agree with the above posters who say to paint the ceiling a lighter shade of the wall color. As a reformed white-only ceiling person, it is a stretch but it gives the room a finished look. I recently had an interior designer share their thoughts about white ceilings on our blog: http://blog.17thandriggs.com/2011/04/interview-with-interior-designer-matthew-morgan/ I realize that having the ceiling the exact same color as the walls would eliminate the need to carefully tape the ceiling but the difference will not be as stark as wall color with white ceiling would be (and a few minor mistakes will be as obvious as if they were on a white ceiling). Also, trim/moulding around the perimeter of the ceiling will make a HUGE difference in the room. It can be done inexpensively with some ready-made trim and a bit of assistance from your fiance:).

A very pretty kitchen, environmentally friendly redo and for under 6K! I'm filing this one away for inspiration...

I agree with the majority of the posts that if a piece of furniture is of good quality and constructed of beautiful wood, then there is almost an obligation to allow its natural beauty shine. (Most wood antiques would be in this category.) However, if it is a lesser piece, then it's an opportunity to have fun and go crazy with paint, stencils, crazy hardware or whatever.

I just visited the US Botanic Gardens this weekend - although I live in DC it was the first time for me - one of those local places you fail to take advantage of. Anyway, it is, as you say, a fantastic escape. The moist, warm air fragrant with the smell of flowers, foliage and soil makes you feel as though you are on vacation at a tropical destination (if you let your imagination steal you away for awhile!) and the vibrancy of the colors is inspiring. As you say - you leave refreshed. Part of the Hawaii section was closed but will be reopening in early March. I will be sure to visit again soon. (PS - my 14 month old daughter loved it - the colors/water were mesmerizing. They also have an area designed specifically for children although it was closed due to the rainy weather.)

What a great resource to have on hand. It has the same effect as limestone. That and it is less expensive and easier to work with? Sounds good to me. Francois & Co.'s reproductions are lovely!

Very cool - I live not far from here in Dupont. I would say that the exterior elements are among my favorite of the house tour. Love the natural wood elements of the fence and all of the green is fantastic.

Love this house. Light and bright like a beach house plus sophisticated minimalist styling. Gorgeous. Are those rocking chairs as dining chairs? So unusual - but cool - just don't know if it would be relaxing or distracting to be able to have a dinner party of folks rocking...

An inspirational approach to making a rental home, including some great tips on using bold color (something unusual and what you might not choose if it were a permanent place of residence). I love the idea of the graffiti on the water tanks too!

I agree that the wood grain is beautiful, but you can update the look without losing the beauty of the natural grain by stripping and restaining - not painting - them a different color. Since the cabinets look to be only stained and not painted, it should be relatively easy to strip them to remove the old stain (it is not as difficult as having to remove goopy, heavy paint).

You could use two gray stains - one super light, almost chalky and one just slightly darker - using the darker on the bottom cabinets and the lighter on the top. Then you can add backsplash with some crisp white in it to bring some additional light into the room and emphasize the nice white sink.

I would use different window treatments - something more tailored looking or just remove them altogether. If you like a contemporary look I would consider something in gray and/or white with clean lines to match the cabinetry. I think continuing the colors in various shades throughout the room will look very modern and you can add all of the accent color you like decorative items.

If you use a gray stain the current hardware would probably work as sort of a nod to its mid-century modern aesthetic. Or you could replace with something more modern. The other thing I would consider replacing at some point is the faucet. It is fairly easy to do and would make a big difference.

We recently redid our kitchen: http://blog.17thandriggs.com/2010/02/our-kitchen-redo/ The stain is super dark but when you are in the room you can actually still see a small amount of wood grain. I had originally wanted to do a two color redo - white cabinets on the top and dark on the bottom - but am pretty happy with the results.
Good luck!

Very interesting background and makes us (your readers) just a bit more knowledgeable. What a great thing to experience while thoroughly enjoying reading material about interior design and things you love.

From a design standpoint I have a love/hate relationship with these dodecahedrons. They've always reminded me of folksy art... I vaguely associated them with the Pennsylvania Dutch (I'm from Pennsylvania) which is clearly incorrect. Knowing their origin and history makes me have more appreciation for them. Thanks for the education.

My favorites have to be the two prints from a local artist I got during a trip to Venezuela a few years ago. It was a memorably relaxed, bright and sunny day. Every time I look at them I automatically visualize the bright sunshine and the activity of the market. I am transported for a moment - which I suppose is the purpose of a memento or even the most tchotchke of souvenirs.
