Ah. We have really, really old stairs so the lip overhangs a LOT. The riser has never shown a mark (previous colour: light blue).

The wallpaper is on the riser, not the step, so I can't see how it would get any traffic (unless you like to kick the riser as you climb the stairs). Great idea, though. We're reclaiming our old stairs from years of abuse, and the wallpapered riser idea looks great!

I live on an up-and-coming mixed-use street in Toronto where a new bar opens every month. Its great - until you have to live through the noise of the patrons outside the bars at 2am. (The bars themselves, save one frat-bar example, respect the neighbours and keep it down.)

I'd love to post signs saying to patrons to just keep it quiet and respect the neighbours. There are other hot social areas nearby where the bars and restaurants have posted those signs themselves, and it works.

I've been wondering if its possible to call up Yellow Pages and put myself on a 'do-not-receive' list. I hate having to recycle it - even though that is the smartest solution. I'd rather just not receive it at all. (That, and the five other 'neighbourhood' speciality publications they foist on my stoop.)

Has anyone done that - phoned them to ask NOT to receive the book?

Weird - our kitchen table growing up was an old sewing machine trestle with an oiled reclaimed wood top. It could seat six! (My mom was an antiquer in the 1970s, so I guess in that context, its not that odd. Just interesting to see that old idea renewed here.)

For mirrors and windows, I use a 1 to 4 solution of vinegar and water in an old spray bottle. I put a drip or two of dish soap in, which gets rid of all the chemically residue left behind by years of Windex. That, and using newspapers instead of paper towel, and they glow (no streaks).

Re: Method products.

Here's an article about the dishsoap, which has 1, 4-dioxane. Basically, anything with a floral or fruit scent should be viewed with suspicion, unless the actual plant is listed (like lemon juice):

I guess I read your posts and ads like I would any magazine or newspaper - with a hope that there is a division between 'church and state.' (I don't read magalogues because there is no division - the articles are just hawking the company wares).

There are plenty of ads bombarding me on your site, and I would hope that they paid well - some are from TV stations in my area, as well as banks. Plus there are the Google ads in the right-hand corner. So having a 'sponsored post,' no matter how well tagged, just feels like I should be suspicious of all of your posts.

You've put me on edge now.

Oh please don't paint that shelf! Its so unusual, that if you paint it out you're going to lose its uniqueness. The wood grain and natural edge elements are fantastic.

If you are set on having a small coloured shelf next to your bed, please store this beauty and buy another shelf to put there.

I worked in a bedding and bath shop when I was young, so it got drilled into me: thirds, then half. I still do it, and find towels take up less space in my closets and are very easy to unfold to put on a towel bar.

But the 'right' way? I don't think there is a right or wrong way, as it won't affect the actual towel.

Perhaps a leather sofa - works best for spills, cleans up easier, and men (generally) seem to like the look and feel of leather.

I'd also suggest perhaps a lounge chair for your husband - something with an ottoman, perhaps a Poang-like chair on the low-end (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S09829137) or something similar if you have a larger budget? Great for watching the game, and he won't feel so out of it with the couch.

I think if they are staggered like steps, the focus goes to the frames and the geometrical space they create, rather than focus on the images within the frames. Its too much geometry. Either a salon-style (which breaks up any repetition and/or recognizable shape-making), or gallery style (whether its 57" or a bit higher - but heavens, don't let him centre them at the height of the wall or go close to the ceiling!) would do.

I would recommend much larger frames and deep mat to add some drama and size to the photos, and also to focus the eye more on the image itself. This may help solve the too-much-wall-space argument.

Air fresheners trigger my asthma, and have been linked in some studies to other lung issues. I hate a bad-smelling bathroom, believe me, but I'd rather cover my nose than grab my inhaler. (And most of those fake air fresheners smell so odd, so very fake...)

Wow - the lazy susan idea is great! We have such a small under-counter space, and I'm always vainly trying to find things that have been stuffed in there. Nice idea.

i have a table lamp in my bathroom, and its a one-piece glass lamp (shade and base), which avoids any moisture ruining the shade. its also set away from the sink, and provides a lovely glow of light for when i have guests over and wish to have some sort of guiding light on so they can find their way - better than lighting candles in the bathroom.

I like the drawing idea - very cool. I started my own project as well...

In order to figure out how to use my new DSLR, I set up a blog and am taking one photo a day. To make it more interesting (in a conceptual way), I've also added one line from my horoscope each day to the photo. You can view it here: http://unboughtstuffeddogs.blogspot.com .

Its interesting to have the daily task, and I'm finding that my eye is getting better trained as to composition, light sources etc. (which was the intent). If I had just gone out for a few days and snapped away, I think the camera would be gathering dust right now and I'd be no closer to understanding how photography (or, at least, my photographic contraption) works.

HBC blankets are the best, and have a very long history. They were used for trading for pelts in Canada, and have been around for hundreds of years.

I save as much paper as possible from years past - paper, bows, ribbons, ornaments, tissue, boxes, bags - and repurpose them year after year. The selection varies year to year (thank heavens!), and I may supplement with one roll of kraft paper if I have extra-large packages that can't be covered by what I currently have.
