@Sprayfaint, I was wondering the same thing, myself and found this blog entry: http://www.designsponge.com/2010/11/before-and-after-basics-veneer-issues.html Perhaps this is what the author meant by "ironing trick?"

This is a beautiful make-over though. It makes me want to go thrifting for old furniture!

This is one of my favorite tours ever. I had become a fan of Donna's when I happened upon the tutorial for that super-awesome twig chandelier in the kitchen. I love everything about your home, Donna. If you surround yourself with what you love and you're happy and comfortable living there, then there is nothing wrong with it.

I listen to NPR when I'm doing projects inside and outside, talk radio in general is perfect for me, and Radiolab sounds great too. I will definitely check that out. Thanks LizU!

Our little cottage-like brick ranch sits on an acre and a half in the 'burbs and the front yard is ridiculously enormous. I've been cutting out beds a little at a time and replacing areas of the lawn with drought-tolerant perennials. It looks so much better and the dogs still have room to play when we're hanging out in front. I think replacing lawns with more practical plants is a great idea.

I find the story about the Oak Park woman with the veggie garden in her front yard absolutely appalling. I really hope she wins the case. Vegetable gardens are beautiful and useful. How can anyone have a problem with that? I live in the metro Detroit area and Oak Park isn't a bad area, but it isn't exactly known for its landscaping aesthetics. People need to get their heads out of their asses.

I truly hope this is just an artistic piece and that someone wouldn't truly have this monstrosity in a home.

What a happy, comfy looking home! I really like where you chose to add little pops of color as well. The back yard and plant next to the table is to die for! I adore the dogs too. Very cute!

I'm so happy to see so many Michigan people on Apartment Therapy! Yay, Michigan!

Christine, I love everything about your home. The colors, the artwork and accessories are just perfect and it looks so clean, happy and homey. Definitely don't forget to put a link to you and your friend's shops. I am in love with the kitty-cat curtains too! Nice job!

I have a green bathroom with crisp white trim. We have these old 3x3 tiles that are sort of a mintish-seafoam green with yellowish undertones. They're not a solid, matte kind of color and they're kind of translucent so I had a hard time figuring out a color to paint on the walls. The previous occupants painted the walls orange. *shudder*

So I matched the tiles to a paint color and then added white until I was happy with the color for the walls and it turned out to be a honeydew green. It sounds odd, but it really is so airy and clean looking. I am so pleased with how it turned out! http://www.flickr.com/photos/fairy_dogmother/5758918966/in/photostream

I was just going to echo what lynnebee said. I can't get on board with painting the whole pot, but a centered oval or another shape in chalkboard paint would look nice! I like the way terracotta looks, so I wouldn't want to cover it all.

I have painted pots in acrylic paint with success, but I always sealed them and they lasted for a really long time, but they got a little sun-bleached after 4 or 5 years.

The color choices drew me in too. I think this looks like a very comfortable, clean and happy place. I'm still a fan of the Keep Calm poster too, Holhum is right, many folks haven't seen it and at the end of the day, we have to surround ourselves with things we enjoy. Sure lots of homes featured in the tours have the poster, but the people who piss and moan about seeing them are way more annoying IMHO.

This is SO much better! I love it! I like the kitty decal on the dishwasher too!

I'll echo the hate for the pine too. It's like a '50s cabin. I'd paint over it with absolutely no hesitation.

My old house had original wood trim and I was always in the HELL NO DON'T PAINT IT category. But the people who bought the house painted it white and then painted the walls a darker neutral it looks a lot better. It looks new and crisp. I think if you want to sell it, and the wood is in good shape. Leave it and see what happens. However, I do think that painted trim with a neutral on the wall will attract a larger pool of potential buyers, so if you're in a hurry to sell it and the quality of the wood is iffy, I'd definitely paint it.

The before was a nice piece of furniture, but I can understand being tired of it and Ben wanting to make it more suited to his taste. It was kind of grandmotherly and it was a job well-done and it works for him. I agree with the person who said that we shouldn't just redo cheap furniture from IKEA. Well-done, Ben.

I love it. I don't find it cold or too minimalist at all. I think with all the plants and personal details, it's actually quite a comfy looking space and there is so much creativity throughout! Also, kitties always make a house feel like a home.

I love the baby jesus banana holder. That, my friend, is a thing of beauty. Also, great job on utilizing pegboards. I just really love everything about this place.

Do your cats leave the plants alone? The leaves look so healthy and untouched. I figured by the time my cats got to a certain age, they'd leave plants alone, but they range in age from 8 to 21, and they're still getting into mischief!
