The Color Cure

I would probably differentiate the wall colors for the second floor vs. the first floor lofted space, so there's a stronger visual distinction of "out there" over the railing. I'd also put a larger bookshelf in front of that half wall space next to the railing -- I'd fill that space with it. And I agree with other commenters who suggested floor plants along the railing.

I'd agree with ebanfield. I wouldn't trade my 755 sq. ft. Chicago apt. for that. Would much rather live in a great neighborhood with good public spaces where I can walk to everything, and never have to fuss with cars.

Not to mention, that home is on the edge of a cliff! With erosion and earthquakes, how much more time does that home have? Something tells me my 80-year-old condo building will be standing long after this house has fallen into the ocean.

I've always pretty much been a believer in doing without what I don't need. So I haven't had to change much and have money saved up just in case. I own a small one-bedroom with my partner and we don't own a car, which saves TON. It's amazing how much money other people spend on transportation.

We have reconsidered redoing our bathroom though. And we bought a worm bin so we'd have better plant food for our windowsill herbs and spices, making cooking at home more tempting.

yeah, sleeping suspended over the crib would freak me out, but besides that, i'm jealous.

I really don't like box springs -- they seem wasteful and remind me of old people. It's like a silly cultural tradition people just keep doing because that's what we do.

Funny you should say you had a bad experience with not having one. The last time I had one, the top somehow wasn't level so I was always rolling to one side of the bed. Very unnerving. I now have a platform bed with a good new mattress and no box spring, and I love it, though I like a very firm mattress. It seems with the extra thick new mattresses (the kind you can't flip) that you shouldn't need a box spring -- I think they're just milking consumers for money.

I also don't get why people like sleeping high off the ground. I hate high beds and I certainly wouldn't want to sleep in a bed I feel like I have to "climb" into. I prefer to be able to sit with my feet on the floor (chair height) on the edge of my bed, which is the height I get with my platform and extra thick mattress.

I had my dining table custom made from American Barn Company in Lakeview ( http://americanbarncompany.com ). You might not think their aesthetic would fit your place based on their website, but I had a very minimalist table made that fits perfectly in my place, which has a kind of modern industrial look. They also use recycled wood, which aside from saving trees I think has more character. My table was around $1,200 (36x60). Friends of mine loved it so much that they went there and asked them to remake our table for them. The guy I talked to at their storefront was very nice and very patient talking through the design details and what I wanted my table to look like.

Just found my table in their gallery: http://www.americanbarncompany.com/images/projectgallerypic_1rusticpinetable.jpg
