we're soon getting a new bed that has hydraulic lifters to life the platform and mattress up to reveal storage. the space under the mattress is fully enclosed so no need to worry about dust getting in and will give us a ton of storage space. we stayed at an apt in barcelona recently that was furnished with these types of beds and it was a revelation to us that they even existed. and as if on cue, above mentioned son walked in and as i tried to scroll off the photos so he wouldn't see said amazing wallpaper, he of course caught a glimpse and said "what's that?? i want you to do that in my room!" now how do i explain custom made, licensing fees and cease and desist orders to a 6 year old? leather has been my answer to this problem. we do enforce a relatively strict eating at the dining table rule and we do have an open floor plan so that certainly makes it easier. but the new leather karlstad from ikea has been a dream (minus the cheap looking blocky feet that need to be replaced with something sleaker) and is far better quality than i could have expected for $900. and our ebay persian rug from 8 years ago (which is who knows how old) has held up incredibly well too. plus the millions of colors and very busy pattern hides anything that might actually have stained it after all these years, particularly red wine :) New Options for Kid-Friendly Upholstery |

I do what arroyo suggested and buy off the shelf frames and have custom mats cut for the pieces i'm framing. I find that i can have the mats cuts for less than $25 in most cases and can choose from a huge variety of colors and then just put it all together in a standard frame and save tons of money over all custom framing. I'm just too scared to try cutting my own mats and i always end up being very happy with the results and the price point doing it the other way. DIY Framing: How To: Cut a Mat |

can anyone speak to where or how to find shelving that is strong enough to hold kitchen items (ie: cannisters of dry goods, glassware, etc) but without visible hardware? i'm thinking of LACK style but stronger with a higher weight load. Wow, I think that's a pretty fabulous base to work with! I would look at Rejuvenation and Schoolhouse Electric for light fixtures to replace the flourescent and I definitely recommend a quartz composite countertop material. We just had Hanstone countertops installed and I'm very very happy with it. A solid pop color like a green or orange would be fantastic I think. I agree with extending the tile backsplash above the stove to the rest of the wall and maybe upgrade to a slide-in stove if you do replace the coutertop, I think it gives a cleaner look overall. The wallpaper I think could go either way, if you do keep it, play off of one of the colors in other elements, ie countertop. Suggestions for a Vintage Kitchen? We bought both our sterns and fosters queens sized with boxsprings, but have since ditched both the boxsprings. As it turns out, we have 2 of the same Ikea platform bed with the slats and have no problems without the boxsprings. I think a good quality mattress is the key. We'll never buy anything but a sterns and foster. We have one pillow top and one without and they're both the best beds ever. Apartment Therapy San Francisco | Do You Have a Box Spring? |
