You can use an organic box mix and use mashed bananas in place of the eggs and half the oil. IT WORKS LIKE A CHARM! It creates this dense flavorful cake that is just so moist. I made a vegan wedding cake this way. It was so simple.

my dad worked the kill floor at a pork plant for years. it isn't as terrible as one might think. Most of the workers find a calm, almost sweet, way of taking care of the pig until their final minutes.

As a wannabe farm girl, I learned to kill chickens in my adolescent years. Once you learn to kill and clean your own food, you DO gain a respect for meat that most people never know.

I helped raise a cow one summer that I knew from day one was going to be in the freezer one day. And when it went to the butcher, I cried a little. But there's a separation that happens in your head when raising your own food. It isn't personal. Which, I feel most people take it. It's just about food. I think even the cow understood that.

this is one of my favorite things ever.
like, ever.
it was the best thing in the world to come home to after school. a plate of halfed peaches filled with cottage cheese that our mom sat in front of us.

oh, the goodness.

we recently used rain gutters for our craft room.
perfect for spools of ribbons, odds and ends and even as a tray for paintbrushes and cookie cutters and the like.
we love it!!

(and it was WAY cheaper than shelving!)

when I was little, my great grandma would take me out in the Indiana woods and pick gooseberries. Then we'd come in and listen to the radio and clean them.

baked in a flaky crust with a good helping of sugar and cinnamon, they are AWESOME!

man, I miss her.

My darling father takes a trip to Iowa for a week every year to hunt these bad boys down. (I use the word hunt loosely. Really? Hunting?) He and his group of childhood friends shed their neckties for a 15-Passenger Van full of beer and camouflage. Yes! Camo! for MUSHROOMS!I'm sure the group of them would do this in a heartbeat!

my question is, why do they have to know they are leftovers? if the food is good, not been in the fridge too long, you can heat it up, put it on a platter add a few sprinkles of this and a few dashes of that, it'd look like you made it special. why not?

I made this soup last night and had to keep smacking my hand to stay out of it while the lentils cook. I used beef stock instead of chicken because that's all I had. be careful not to over salt. IT IS SOOOOO GOOD!!

YES!

There is nothing like it! Growing up my great grandmother was a true farm wife. She taught me how to milk the cow, shake a mason jar until the butter came out, pluck a chicken, take care of eggs and how to make a goose a friendly. (It was all in the marshmallows!) But clabber always fascinated me. At home, milk that was left out was practically the start of the plague. A huge no go zone. But at her house, she'd set a pail on the kitchen counter away from the windows. And I've never tasted cornbread like it! I wish she were still around now that I'm older. I could sure use her wisdom.

anyone into stamping fabric or printmaking? Styrofoam makes an AMAZING template. Lots of it can be carved and used to apply a vast array of products. Give it a whirl. It's a great rainy day project. And don't forget to look through your kitchen. that electric knife you never use? totally great with the styrofoam.
