Is this in the SDR? I used to live in that building.

I take size into account, for sure. In fact, I don't vote for apartments over ~600 feet because I don't consider that small (unless, maybe, I knew there was a family of four living in that space). I live in a 330 sq ft apartment and I'm only really impressed with spaces that are around my size or smaller.

This is the first entry this year that I've really felt inspired by and excited about. Definitely my favorite so far.

I also have a set of legs from Uncle Bob's workshop, for my Karlstad sofa, and I couldn't be happier!

New Products For Customizing IKEA Furniture

Those little wooden drawers are definitely from Ikea, I have them, but I think they've been discontinued. I just looked at the label on mine and they're called "Forhoja". I did a search on the Ikea website and it brought up a few products from that line but not those drawers.

Oh and just for fun, the lowest rent I ever paid was $75/month for an unfinished attic/loft in a garage, in Olympia, WA in 2000. The highest I've paid was $950 for an ugly, tiny one bedroom apt in San Francisco in 2009.

I live in Portland, OR and currently pay $785 for a 330 sq ft studio in a vintage building, with lots of charm. The most I could possibly pay in my current financial situation (low paying job) would probably be $800, so I'm right at it! The lowest rent I would expect to find for a cute apartment in a good/central neighborhood is around $650.

Also, I have the same sofa as you (but in a different color), and I had it in the same place you have yours, ha.

Yes I think you did! I was selling the table and chairs to a guy from craigslist. Tragically my new place is too small for them. Your apartment is identical in layout to my old place (#23); it's strange and awesome to see your version!

I'm pretty sure I just moved out of your building! SDR?

I'm your neighbor! From one block to the west. I was wondering which building you lived in when I saw this earlier, and then tonight I was walking to Whole Foods, looked up, and saw your chandelier through the window. Um hopefully this comment doesn't seem creepy, ha.

I don't know the answer, but I'm so jealous. I think that's one of the most awesome couches I've ever seen.

Who Designed My Couch?
Good Questions

5/4/11 7:38 PM

in the winter of 2000 I paid $75/month to live in a rickety lofted area in a garage, with no insulation and only a sketchy space heater. The next summer I had an attic room in a house which I actually loved, but the glass was completely missing from one of my windows, and the room was infested with wasps. I learned to peacefully co-exist with them and was never stung, but they did creep me out sometimes. We only paid $300/month in rent for the entire two bedroom house. The foundation of the house was damaged in an earthquake that year and it was probably totally unsafe for us to be living there. The house was indeed condemned not long after we moved out.

Hello again! Now that the contest is long over, I wanted to share a link to many more photos of my apartment, in case anyone would like to see!

I like all the plants! Especially the long dangly one in the bathroom. I lived in my 250 sq ft apartment with a boyfriend for about six months and it was fine. We recently broke up but it had nothing to do with the apartment.

thesmilequeen: I haven't seen the Tord Boontje light in any stores, I got mine from www.unicahome.com.

Olivia4953: Thanks for the plant suggestion, that looks like a nice one!

Shanalulu: the bedside light is by Tord Boontje.
Jany: My clothes are in the credenza. It's huge, has nine drawers, so there's room for plenty of stuff in there.
Stefaniieee: the litterbox is under the sink.

The sofa is almost as long as my apartment is wide, so there's no way to position it perpendicular to the wall, unless it was with the back up against the window. I did actually try that but it made the apartment feel much smaller.
I do have a bookshelf next to the desk now, it's the lighter cabinet.
Yes the sofa faces the TV, but, well...I watch TV and I'm not one of those people who tries to pretend I don't. There's some artwork there above the credenza, I know it doesn't really show in the photos, but I have Ork city prints of San Francisco and Portland on either side of the TV. I chose to not set up my apartment to accommodate friends because, as I said in a comment above, I very rarely have people over and tend to meet friends out in public instead, so it wouldn't really be logical to design my apartment around socializing or have a bunch of extra seating. The rare times that I have more than one person over at a time, the windowsill works as seating as well. It's about 16 inches deep.
The look I was going for was austere simplicity. Living in downtown SF can be really crazy and overwhelming, so when I come home I want everything to be quiet and serene.

Thanks everyone for your nice comments and votes! Yes the empty shelves are cat stairs, though one night she surprised me by climbing up the ladder like a human. I've only seen her do it the one time.
The shared bathrooms aren't bad at all. They're cleaned every day by professional cleaners, and it's only a ten second walk down the hall.
JulieR: I rarely have people over, I tend to meet up with friends in public instead, so I didn't plan out my apartment with socializing in mind.
Elise_B: I actually have plans to put a big plant in that spot, as soon as I find the right one! It's hard to find plants that appeal to me and are non-toxic for my cat (she likes to munch on leaves).

Does anyone else have a problem with the house tours messing up your computer? I'm on a Mac, using Safari, and everytime I click on a slideshow on here it makes my browser freeze up and then shut down. It's been happening for the last year or so, every single house tour that I've tried to look at. The house tours are one of my favorite things on AT so I'm pretty sad about it. I'm not very computer-savvy, so if anyone has any advice please let me know.
