**Apologies for the typo at the end of the post---I clearly mistyped her name, and meant no disrespect to Sherry---I'm an avid reader and respect her point of view wholeheartedly. As for the photos, I ought to have indicated more clearly that they were not intended to be before and after photos, but rather images of the evolution of her style.

I hope that folks enjoyed the point of the post in spite of any confusion!

have some fun making your own ornaments! and @graphist: we ended up polyurethaning them, which made them glossy and lovely!

thanks, y'all!

alas, my friend just replied, and she actually dismembered an entertainment center that she got from Ashley furniture when she was in college, and reassembled it into two stand-alone shelves.

the perils of having creative friends--sometimes they made that awesome thing you wanted to buy, too!

hi, y'all!

thanks for the great feedback!

@carlin77: the paint color is Glidden Silver Birch. we tried many many grays before we found one that was very subtle but still made the white pop---and wasn't too blue! gray is hard to do, but it's all about testing a portion on your wall first!

@mattster & esvoytko: i actually bought these shelves off of a friend who was downsizing (there's another one in my studio) so i'm not sure where they're from. i have an inquiry in with my friend...i'll let you know if/when i find out!

The paint color is Dulux's "Party Surprise 2" (dulux.co.uk). It's in the text of the article, but you have to zoom in...

Thank you for all of the comments! It has been a challenge working with such a small place, but I have enjoyed fine-tuning everything over the last few months.

The paint color is Behr Winter Surf. The website for Behr, behr.com, has a great color selection tool, although I noticed that it wasn't quite as vibrant on my screen--and I've color calibrated my screen! I always use paint chips from the store to decide on a color, anyhow, as the colors tend to shift in different lights. I usually try to get a sample and try that out on a small part of my wall, but I figured that 200 square feet was already just a sample, anyhow.

monarda, the cups are a mixture of antique and faux-antique. The daintier cups are antique, but I believe the short mugs with pink and red flowers are modern, but made to look antique. All are thrift store finds, regardless.

Jackson, my brindle boxer-pit bull, does go quite nicely with the turquoise color, I think! Just to assuage any disapproval that people might have about having a dog in such a small space, I thought I would mention that I do have a yard. The yard is one of the reasons I compromised on space---it's pretty priceless to have a great outdoor area in The Mission/Bernal Heights area!

amazonicon, I had a bit of the same feeling about the curtains, but haven't figured out exactly what to do. They are floor to ceiling, but my ceilings are only 7 feet, and the closet they are hiding takes up all of that 7 feet. I may take your advice and eliminate some of the ruffle by shortening them width-wise a bit.

dkzody, I actually don't have much more kitchen! There is a small bar sink, and a mini-fridge on the bedroom side of the half wall. That would be it! I actually "cook" without a stove or microwave (read: I make a lot of sandwiches).

I have some work to do, yet, but am pretty pleased with the preliminary results. I appreciate all of the feedback and positive comments!

so, i have been reading apartment therapy for about two years now, and live in austin. (i'm one of the ones hounding y'all to add an austin location!) in a week and a half i am moving to san francisco, and so i am ecstatic to have an apartment therapy for the city in which i live!

better, even, is this article! i am trying to find apartments in the city, and i have a doggie---and he's 50 pounds. to me, with a history of 100 pounders, he's not that large. but apparently, he's gargantuan in sf!

this article is so conveniently timed for me and just proves that this website rules!

i agree with lisa in terms of the work being exposed to the elements, etc.

but i also appreciate the stark, modern, *cheap* elements of hanging work like this.

i would recommend, however, folding a small piece of acid-free paper in half (or quarters, for more protection), and placing that over the portion of the poster/print/photo that you clip to help prevent significant indentations, rust and slippage.

another fun thing, for large prints, are the large steel "alligator clips" that you can buy at the hardware store. we hung a series of prints in the gallery i worked for with these, and they were very well received...
