Ditto tea, smoked tea especially. Try Upton's Tea Co's Mincing Lane blend; brew it strong. I wanted red wine badly while I was pregnant, and if brewed strongly enough, tea can also get at that dry tannic taste that I wanted in wine,

I agree that fiction where the central idea is FOOD leaves me cold. The Epicure's Lament, by Kate Christensen, and The Cookbook Collector, by Allegra Goodman, were OK books but didn't really work for me, mostly because I didn't feel great about how food and foodie-ism functioned in the novels. Give me Ha Jin's descriptions of noodle vendors, or Hemingway on cheap white wine, or EF Benson's redcurrant fool from the Mapp and Lucia books, any day. (And Francie's pickle! The best, good mention of A Tree Grows above.)

Boston homes (and kitchens) are often MUCH smaller than homes in other parts of the country, even in other cities, because of when they were built. In an historic home, you might just have to work with the smallness of the kitchen you have, sacrificing a long rectangular island or lots of counter space. I love the cubbies! (And it might be good to point out here that cubbies often become a New England home necessity because the same small historic homes often lack closets, period.) I love this little kitchen. More little Boston homes please AT (a little house is in my future)!

THANK YOU. One more story about how "my little blessing simply ADORES chicken breast, cooked simply and cut up, with a side of quinoa, cooked beans, and steamed broccoli--honestly I don't see the nutritional value in CORN" and I'd probably barf. My kid is in the 15th-20th weight percentile, and is excrutiatingly picky. If I hadn't "given in" and let her try chicken nuggets and fish sticks, she's be literally living on strawberries and mac and cheese. And funnily, I think discovering some of the kid foods she really loves has made her MUCH more willing to try new things, healthy adult foods off our plates. She now tries a bite of every food at the table, even if she only chooses to really eat kid stuff.

Thank you for arguing against strictly sanctimonious mommy food attitudes.

I froze a jambalaya (with the rice stirred in) when I was 36 weeks pregnant and it was an EPIC mistake. Not only did the rice mushify, but I was NOT digging anything spicy-peppery after the baby came. And so my poor husband soldiered through 12 servings on his own. I made a mild white chicken chili that did well (posole and beans for bulk).

Remember your lunches-snacks too. Freeze some (baked! Don't fool with freezing dough here) cookies and muffins. You don't even need to reheat or thaw them, good for when you must sit down to nurse but you need a quick energy burst before you do.

It's like naming a baby, right? Sort of? Best advice I ever heard about that was that the baby is both of yours, so keep looking until you find a name that makes both of you happy. My Hband and I had a minor squabble over dining chairs and, by watching and waiting, we were able to find the PERFECT chairs that both of us love. Wouldn't have happened if I'd thrown my tantrum and got my way.

I think this is pretty neat. Sometimes when you're teaching a kid to cook, the easiest-way-with-ok-and-instant-results is the best route. Same applies to teaching some adults to cook. PLUS my mom-of-picky-eater response is, "great, protein and calcium in the crust from the yogurt!" We might give it a go.

I've long enjoyed a dash or two of Angostura bitters in my ginger ale. Perrier looks pretty fancy! Will have to try soon.

Pizza! Good artisan crust on a hot hot hot stone, a little of this sauce, some taleggio, and then top it with some arugula dressed in olive oil and salt. I've made pizza with fig preserves before, with stinky cheese and arugula, and it was awesome.

And DON'T buy the Reynolds pan-lining wrap because it's AWFUL. Don't even buy it if your grocery store is all, you don't need parchment spend extra money on this, because it curls up and is terrible. Makes baked goods soggy, too.

Um, cookies? Anyone? And a big glass of milk? It's great to be virtuous and eat beans and cooked chicken and avocado, but I really, really found that I needed the fat and sugar in cookies. Health 'em up with ingredients like oatmeal, peanut butter, and blackstrap molasses (vitamins! Iron!) I also had a pretty serious kale chip fetish, with lots of olive oil and sea salt. Again, lots of vitamins and iron.

Just cook it up like rice, with salt, and serve it up with butter as a side instead of rice or mashed potatoes. It's (almost) a whole grain! My one year old likes to pick up the grains and feed herself, so it's a pretty accessible/agreeable flavor.

AWESOME post. I've also found that cooked chickpeas travel well (well, when my kid is having an "on" day with them, anyway). I am seriously not sure what mothers did before those squeeze pouches.

We, too, have shifted our meal time earlier so that we can eat "civilized." My 11 month old and I have a snack together around 4 or 4:30 (fruit and cheerios) and then we eat at 6 as a family. However, I *don't* think this makes a difference in fussy eating or not. She's a pretty fussy eater regardless. It's more about treating her like a full-fledged person.

Katrosa731, I bought it at Costco a couple weeks back. It was $11 there (I live in MA). I love the Evolution White soo much that I was almost disappointed with the red, even though it is a perfectly okay wine. Interesting review!
