This is just a guess, but I bet you most of the apartments with bathrooms off the kitchen are old buildings that pre-date indoor plumbing. It's much cheaper to have all the plumbing added in one area than to modernize a whole apt.
My mom grew up in an old farmhouse that had a summer kitchen with a water pump on the back of the house and an outhouse in the yard. when they finally added indoor toilet/bath the only logical place was to add it to the existing plumbing in the kitchen. Hence the embarrassing reality of pooping mere feet from the kitchen table at mealtime. Luckily the outhouse was still usable!

I can't believe no one mentioned the obvious - paying rent/mortgage in a ridiculously expensive city all by yourself. Otherwise, there's nothing better than living alone!

Buy fabric from a real fabric store, it comes on a roll, so they can roll off as much length as you need. Near me that is places like Fabricland, but there are many others.

I'd really love an outdoor solar light that is bright enough to read by. I've been through all the links and have searched extensively online, but they all seem to be about ambient lighting.

Relax, this is something that was very popular when I was in my 20s and no apartments caught fire. You leave the original fixture over the bulb, and it blocks most of the heat.

Then make sure that the scarf or wall hanging is draped appropriately low. I would check mine periodically if the light was on all day, and it was never even warm. The is also a cheap solution for covering water damaged ceilings that your landlord was too cheap to repair.

I use my toaster oven for all kinds of things, but especially toasting nuts. I use the medium "toast setting" and I never burn them that way. I also use it for broiling. No need to heat up a whole oven for 1 or 2 portions.

I tell my family I don't want to exchange gifts at xmas etc, to save money, and my mom who used to be the queen of bad gifts has really gotten into it. The exception is she know I really like this one kind of face cleanser/cream that is expensive, and she knits. So for several years I've been getting the same gift repeatedly - face cream and hand-knit dish clothes and wash clothes - which is fine by me!

I think this is great, but I would like to know more about the composting toilet. Do you have any problems with smell with it being so close to the kitchen? Any lessons learned about it?

I like my apartment a lot except for the small windows in a north-facing suite. Living in Vancouver, BC where it is grey and raining so often, I can't understand why anyone would design a building with these piddly little windows. Especially because I have a panoramic view of the mountains (if I stand right in front of the window ;) )

The second thing is the bedroom is right next to the front door - another "what were they thinking" design quirk.

In Vancouver large supermarkets are far and away the most expensive places to buy staple veggies, maybe not dry goods, but veggies are ridiculously overpriced at places like Safeway. Small neighbourhood grocers are much, much cheaper and have more selection, Chinatown grocers are the cheapest of all - for produce, perhaps because they specialize in produce and turn it over quickly.

Yes yes I'm Canadian too, and yes I'm strictly shoes off, and again - never need to be rude to guests because it's not rude, it's a well-accepted custom, so the vast majority of people do it automatically. Living in Vancouver I know a lot more Americans now (border town), so know I need to mention it to them, but even they are so used to it now it is a non-issue. For me it is not about dirt per se, or a germ-phobia, it is just a strongly held custom for many (not all) Canadians - it's just how I was raised and it feels wrong to do otherwise. when I go to an American friend's house and they suggest I keep my shoes on. I do it, but it still feels wrong.

I think the rug is a great idea for someone like me who just wants the look, doesn't need a real headboard. Those small ikea shag rugs are washable so I doubt it would be an issue. A small colourful non-shag would also work. I currently have a wall tapestry behind my bed, I lean on it and it is fine. I guess the gist of my comment is - to each his own!
