Best of both worlds! I'm in a house, but we're 52 stair steps up the hillside. I love the view, the light, the quiet, the safety, the green, and still being close to the ground. :)

YES YES YES. Mayo = gateway drug of condiments, but ketchup and mustard = soo easy and good. I do a lot of my own jams and jellies as well, and make extra to give as gifts or trade at food swaps for salsas and hot sauces! :)

I did the same thing a few years ago. Beautiful studio at the right price with decent light and hardwood floors, crummy neighborhood with dirty building. It was somewhere between a midday police standoff, half eaten cheeseburgers in the stairwells, and insomnia that came from fighting bedbugs nightly for months that I realized it was the wrong decision. So I vote no. In the end, it's not worth it and there are better options available.

Agreed with kwhoa- if they're even next door to a place listed on bedbug registry, I'm looking elsewhere.

Also, I will never live in an apartment again, period. I'd rather have 2+ roommates in a house. I am miserable without the outdoor space for a garden!!!

The last person that lived in my current bedroom installed a 1x10" board on brackets about 8" from the ceiling, and it stretches the length of the wall over the closet and door. Best shelf in the room! (And it fits almost all of my heels perfectly.)

Would be careful moving it indoors unless you're certain the pallets are untreated. (Something about chemical off-gassing.) Still, thumbs up to recycling! Outdoor furniture gets expensive quickly.

I love Pinterest too! I've never been organized enough to have a tactile inspiration board (save for fabrics, paints, and wood stains- don't translate well on a monitor.) I think Pinterest still is in the tail end of their beta phase and has some kinks to work out as far as programming and code, but being able to think of something I remember seeing somewhere online and then easily find it with a quick glance to my pinboards is priceless.

Could I can these like I do with other pickles in a hot water bath instead?

@herms Yeah they were definitely pillbugs- I watched them munch away with a flashlight until sunrise to check and make sure! They had laid eggs and were living in the decomposing hay that I was using to mulch, but seemed to prefer green plants as opposed to brown or rotting ones. Apparently they will eat young living plants too, as I found quite a few people on message boards stating the same issue. Almost destroyed my pole beans, assisted the slugs in chomping lettuce, and leveled a few squash seedlings as well.

Thirding the outdoors! There are always a million reuse ideas posted daily, and it would be nice to see how everyone's outdoor living spaces are shaping up. :)

We do the "garbage soup" in my house too, but only vegetables, herbs, and cheese rinds since one of the roommates is vegetarian. I'll also chop and freeze veggies for stir frys (although if the produce in question can be pickled or turned into jam I tend to take an hour out of my sleep schedule and do a couple of quick jars for later!)

Dude! I was totally smitten with Lesley Anton's work after seeing her booth as well- I NEED the bowls that she had on display asap.

Wow. This turned out so gorgeous. Really love the fact that they designed it so well for the space.

I made a reclaimed table for my outdoor area, and I'd second the bracing call. I used several pieces of heavy duty metal stripping that I found near the hardware aisle on the underside of mine, along with maybe 100 screws, and am still worried about warping! The wood I used might be heavier though- the entire top alone weighs in around 80-100lbs. (Also, if you do outdoors, you'll definitely need some polycoat unless you plan on oiling weekly.)

I had these on my kale too this year! I just look for the holes, then find the little buggers and pull them off. Sometimes they are super tiny, so you might have to look really carefully. Good luck!

I haven't tried it, but I'd worry that the slugs and pillbugs would eventually take over and start eating plants. Maybe not as much in some parts of the country, but this year I mulched my raised beds with straw, only to have an insane infestation of pillbugs munching on everything in sight a week later! They really seemed to like the cool, damp habitat that the straw mulch provided. I had to tear it all out and go without mulch in order to have any squash survive. (Granted, my bales are over a year old, so maybe the bales work well the first year and decompose/attract too many insects the second?) Still, definitely an interesting alternative! :)

I feel your pain! I dropped some serious cash to DIY reupholster a couch as well, even though I had never done more than a fitted slipcover before. I think the trick with the big DIYs is to not be dead set on the end goal. That is, constantly innovate as you go, and if the project seems like it's becoming too difficult to manage, change it up! In the end, the fabric I bought became a piece worked bed-skirt and headboard cover, and the couch became this:

Agreed with Naturally Handy. I will also occasionally find herbs that I've never seen seeds for. I've started doing more cuttings though, from hard to germinate herbs, and have had moderate success with those. I've even had some luck rooting a few cut herbs from the farmer's market!
