Hi Sarat, I have a similar situation with a New Vanilla Sofa and a Dark Brown, Leather Loveseat that I am working on.

I suggest that you First lighten up Your Black Furniture with Light Accent Pieces, such as light trays, throws, covers, chair covers, table cloths, lamps, books, etc. in the color family of your beautiful off-white sofa, and then darken your light sofa with Black linen or velvet pillows, throws, and the like, patterned, or unpatterned befitting your decor style. Once you find the right balance of light and dark throughout, select a rug with both light and dark colors, but emphasize the color that is weakest. For example, if after you balance the light and dark, and your room items are still too dark for the sofa, make sure the rug is light, and vice versa. I had to put three light pillows and a light throw to make my Dark Brown Leather love seat work with my Vanilla Sofa, and I have two large Dark Brown Pillows, a Dark Brown Throw and two medium colored pillows, all lightly patterned, on my Vanilla Sofa. I have a light vanilla tray on my dark brown ottoman. I also have light vanilla accents for the ottoman's tray vignette. Now, after all of this balancing out, the Dark is still winning in my apartment , so I am planning to buy a patterned rug that is more on the Light side for my Dark wood floors. So far, my apartment is coming along beautifully. I hope these ideas are helpful! MC

I am following the tips, but I am currently stumped over my wood floors. Do I put the same rug in different sizes in the main area, kitchen and hallway in a small studio? Would that be a design mistake?

Great Ideas. I recently moved and I am at the phase that I have to mull over a few more "larger" purchases. I think I will hold off the many small purchases and save up again, now...with a new fingernail polish, etc. here and there, to ease the pain. Thanks,
