Do you have any info on the chair at the base of the stairs such as age and design origin? I have the same one but with a different upholstery.

The open-ness of the Thonet is good and suitable in that they allow the strong materials of the floor and table to stand out...tho I'd think something upholstered would be better if you are going to use the table for long, sitting-around type occasions.

Bravo, JR.

While I am an educated 'pro' and I can discuss the what's and how's behind your design, ultimately it comes down to the feel which is what most people connect with.

I find this really interesting (and my intent is not to sound corny here) as it takes this kind of work towards the broader idea of what an artisitic endeavour this is.

The grey might work tho...

My apartment walls are in a pale grey, almost white and work with my light-coloured upholstered furniture and the teak/walnut MCM pieces. Mind you, I've got some generous light and not a lot of clutter.

Maybe you can try out the walls for a while with your existing furniture.

Collin73, I hardly think the post is a love letter. While there are several points on the merits of using paper (when there are not many other options) there are waaaay more ideas on how to not (ab)use and to be more mindful.

And even then, I'm sure the readership, if we had to, could figure out alternates to paper towels if we were to decide not to keep them in the house -- we are the converted, after all.

The tubing running across the bottom front of the sofa/chair is not very nice.

This might be a little more expensive to produce, but (if there are any product managers with clout and balls out there reading) I wonder why all the packaging we consume is not designed to be re-used as this example is -- in the first place?

I'm always saving the good-sized bottles and jars (those which are easy to fill and have a decent capacity) and it makes me wish with our increasing awareness of what's going in the landfill needlessly something new and even not that different can come along. Especially here in Canada where we have some of the highest if not the most per-capita packaging consumption in the world.

To get the effect right, more phantom, I'd imagine a sheer fabric could be used.

Otherwise, I'm on the slipcover-on-good-chairs hate train.

For that matter, tho I like the ideas, I've never seen satisfactory executions of fabric cover-overs (like for kitchen cabinets, doorway-nook covers, slips that go over real furniture. The sort of soft, craftsy look doesn't look like it ever belongs with the hard edges.

wrenx, there was a looong comments thread here just the other week on the merits and faults of Ikea affordability and your statement above does not help the disposablity arguement. At all.

I'm glad they put out cast iron. That stuff lasts forever and so much utility. I happen to have a piece by that certain French brand. I may have paid a bit for it. But at least I'm not putting it in the dump anytime soon.

Sure, I'll be part of Gen: Ikea. I must be part of at least one of their target groups...

On one (very large) hand, they have a healthy market which has to be on a modest budget. So I think this is almost everyone. You buy something, use it one way or another.

On the other hand, which may be attached to the same body, are the design critics who loathe the disposability associated with cheap products. But...if you are going to have a conversation about design part of it has to do with not just aesthetics but also economy and utility and not everyone has the same wants/needs or means. The snobbery that I read just tells me some people's design appreciation is just superficial. They don't "get it" but that's okay. I dont know how many times now I've heard people go on about how good and reaasonably-priced the kitchen systems are. This to me is good design -- hey if it's good enough for Mr Adler...but this is just one of their products that speaks to part of their customer base. Not everything has to be super-high-end or disposable crap.

I have a tv mounted in front of a non-working fireplace.

Yes, it is a little low, but only by a few inches. This can be changed. Much preferred to that ubiquitous (suburban) placement over the fireplace. My neck hurts thinking about that.

We have a crackling fire dvd. People love the irony.

The glass table in between the tv and sofa works.

My opinion is in line with everyone else's.

The plastic reminds me of student milk-crate furnishings.

To put on some positive...I might see this as a second basment kitchen installation. And it might work for me IF the elements were primarily salvage/found.

I get what the intent of the frosted panels are doing and I agree with the 'soul-less' character. There's just too much of it.

But you still want the light in the bedroom.

How about taking advantage of the lightness of the panels? Another idea would be to hang artwork from the ceiling.
