Hmmmmm I wonder if the velcro solves the "tile creep" issue that Flor has... I have a 2x3 tile Flor rug in my entry hall that I need pull apart and reassemble at least once a month because the "stickers" that Flor provides do not hold the tiles together... Same issue with my 4x10 tile floor rug in my main room, only less frequent maintenance.

I disagree with item 1 (only having a work account and a personal account).

I have several email address, each for a different purpose. One for personal friends, one for banking and bills, one for shopping, one for all those websites that require you to set up an account (like AT), etc... (I also have an address for each of my websites as well.)

I find it imperative to keep my personal emails separate from my other emails, and all the semi-spammy-advert emails (Gap or CB2 anyone?) all go to a single place where it is easy to quickly review and delete. With my iPhone (or any smart phone you may have) it is easy to keep track of all of the accounts individually or view then all together in a general inbox.

Also, I no longer sort and move emails into folders. I find that it is just easier to leave them in my inbox, and use the search feature to find what I need.

Count me in for continued posts on small space living. There are so few places with consistent real good insight on how to make the best of small spaces... And hundreds and hundreds of places to view midsized to gigantic spaces.

I have had/done both... As nice as having my own washer/dryer was, it is not common in NYC. I have the next best thing. A CLEAN laundry room only an elevator ride away, with $1.50 wash and $1.50 dry. It's great to be able to do four loads of laundry in under two hours every other week.

As for cost/benefit analysis... When you factor in the cost of the machines, and the fact that I don't have to pay for the additional square footage required to have a washer/dryer (at about $1,100 per square foot in Manhattan, the cost of 9 square feet of floor space for the machines alone is valued at nearly $10k) it makes much more sense to use a laundry room, especially with the much higher cost of energy in NYC.

Very nicely done for such a small space.
As lovely as the fire escape is (and it is quite lovely), I would not want to be living above this and ever need to escape in a real fire.

Wow! Hard to believe it's been nearly a decade since I stumbled onto AT. Congrats Maxwell! I must admit, I miss the days when it was just a single blog and I had time to keep up with all of it.

Finally, an apartment that is smaller than mine! This is really really well done. Not only is it small at 280 sq ft, but it is also very narrow on top of that. Chris, given the limitations of not being able to paint, you did a wonderful job of pulling this off. The red makes it pop!

I have to admit, I noticed the hinges on the refrigerator as well... Such a simple fix... Clearly another landlord that doesn't really care about his tenants.

Off topic, but so sad about the annoying spam comments that keep showing up on AT.

Hmmm, not likely to have a use for it. Living in less than 300 sq ft, I would have no place to store this, let alone set it up to use it. I will stick with schlepping my laundry down to the basement via elevator. $1.50 wash and $1.50 dry, not a bad deal.

Wow.... I can understand where the need to use the word visceral comes in to play here. It was exactly my reaction when I began to go through the images....

Strong sense of personal style aside, crown molding has no place in a mid-century modern building. NONE. The whole point of Manhattan House is the celebrate the modern, and to live in a world free of the bondage of over-design. This home misses that essence completely. Gordon Bunshaft would likely rolling over in his grave if he knew this is what was being done to his masterpieces.

This is a time when I am so thankful for building staff. I have lived in snow country for the past 11 years and have yet to lay hands on a snow shovel.
That said, I do wish that the intersections would be cleared better than they are. The sidewalks may be just fine, but crossing the street can be treacherous as small lakes of ice-water hover at every corner.

What a wonderful example of the gracious apartments from Chicago's past. I love the quirky floorplan. The room dimensions are HUGE! The main room in my NYC studio apartment is smaller than the dining room.

My first few years in NYC, there was no laundry in the building so I learned the pleasures of "Drop-off". I would drop-off in the morning on the way to work (at the end of my block), and at $10-12 a week, I would stop by on my way home and pick up my washed, dried, and folded clothes.

Now the laundry room is a short elevator ride away. Clean, modern, a dozen washers and dryers. Easy, but not as lux as drop-off.

Besta is wonderfully versatile. I just hung 4 48"x25" cabinets along a wall just above the baseboard (about 7 inches off of the floor) for a 16" long "credenza". Fabulous!

Sorry to go off topic, but I absolutely LOVE this room.... So cozy and snuggly... I am thrilled to see a dark space featured.
The duvet is fantastic, I wouldn't have a clue where to find it. Looking at the other things in the room, I think the Flor is the least expensive thing there. That duvet is surely pricey.

I had MASSIVE brick walls in my Chicago loft a few years back. When I moved in, they were dark and foreboding. I commited the cardinal sin of painting the brick and was much much happier. I retained all of the texture but no longer had the issues with dust, and darkness.

Nice work Diana... One of my favorite apartments of my past (back in 1990s Seattle) featured a view of a wall about ten feet away from my window. However, the wall was covered in well aged corrugated steel with the most wonderful rust patterns on it. I loved how it seemed to change appearance with the time of day and/or weather.
