I think it might be more essential if you're breastfeeding. You'll spend some long hours in that chair. I was considering an attractive chair vs. a glider and a friend convinced me that I really wanted something comfy, tall enough to rest my head in the middle of the night. I'm so glad I listened. It may seems silly to have an ugly chair that you'll only use for a few years, but those are LONG years in the middle of the night (even if they go fast). We got a glider off of Craigslist, so it wasn't a huge expense.

I'm too paranoid to hang anything framed, so we just have the colorful mobile. Maybe a large unframed print with the old college trick of sticky tack? Or a fabric hanging?

My aunt was the one to give into the craziness and get me a CPK. Adrian had no hair and came wearing a teal corduroy suit. I was far too young to appreciate what I'm sure she went through to get it.

Adorable. I'd love to know the source for the wallpaper.

Like many others above, we used the Snuggle Nest. We borrowed it from a friend, unsure if we wanted to shell out the money, but it would totally have been worth it.

The first weeks, our son would only sleep for 15 or 20 minutes in his co-sleeper/basinet next to the bed, but would sleep for 1 hour in our bed. The snuggle nest meant he was safe between our pillows, wouldn't get caught under covers and wouldn't get rolled onto. It also meant a MUCH better night sleep for me, so I wasn't stuck in one position like a rock so as not to disturb him.

As some other people said, the smell can depend on breastfeeding vs. not. I breastfed and the smell wasn't that bad. We hardly ever end up using our changing table (just use the couch, floor, table, etc) and so the diaper pail got very little use. If you take out your trash regularly, you should be fine without.
