My in-laws had a rocking horse made for both their grandchildren -- my 17mo daughter and her 7mo cousin. That was the big gift this Christmas, and I thought it was great. Handmade by a friend of theirs, made of wood gathered on their farm, has the kid's name carved into it. A real heirloom piece, and beautiful.

BUT... so far, she hasn't been that interested in playing with it. The first couple of days, she wanted to rock over and over, but now she's just walking past it. I'm sure she'll go back to it when she gets a little older. It's a great toy to have, but if I had really limited space I would have had a hard time with this gift.

We got this and were pretty happy with it:

It's got a lot of bells & whistles that you don't need (uh, iPod dock?) but it's not too bad to look at. Our 5 month old still loves it, and for a while it was the only place she would nap.

I feel you about the "ugly plastic crap" thing. I'm trying to keep that to a minimum. I'm not a bright-colors person but I've had to come to the terms with the fact that my daughter loooooooves bright colors. One exception, in my mind, should be something like the swing, which is supposed to help her calm down and sleep.

Pick me! I'm pregnant and can't get a good night's sleep sleeping on my side.

I cannot say enough good things about the AU sleeper sofas. We bought the medium-sized one (with two big cushions) in a gray faux-suede and we absolutely LOVE it. I think we spent around 2K for it. It's great as a couch, very comfy, and everybody who has slept on it says it's fantastic. (Haven't tried it ourselves, although maybe we should...) They have a number of different designs but they all incorporate the "no bar" mattress that makes it a real bed. A friend who lives in a studio is considering buying one to use on a daily basis.

In NYC they're sold at Jensen-Lewis on 6th Avenue -- they don't have all the different models in the store, but they have enough to give you a good idea.
