I did the Fall Cure and it was a lot of fun (although I was really disappointed that my final photos, along with a lot of other folks', weren't shown along with the rest). I don't have the money to do this one, but I'll be watching with interest.

Wait, why is someone choosing painters based on their design sensibilities? Or am I missing something? I thought painters, well, painted.

@mudrick: I still get a lot of paper magazines, but I've started scanning the pages I want to keep. Scan them in as jpgs or pdfs, name the file whatever's interesting on the page, and you've got a good-quality copy that takes up no space.

I wouldn't want to live in an art gallery myself, but hey, different strokes and all.

Our first apartment was listed as 600 sq. ft. We found out after we moved out that it was actually a little under 500. We didn't have any choice about it at the time, so it doesn't really matter, but I was pretty steamed when I found out. Like you said, when a space is that small every bit counts.

It is crazy that in that particular room I actually kind of like the grate? My first thought was to loop strong white wire/cord around some sparklingly clean terra cotta flowerpots (with flowers or just as extra storage space) and hang them from the grate. You could create a nice trellis effect without being as direct as actually twining vines around it.

When I landed my first job out of college, I had exactly two days to find an apartment. We were moving long-distance and didn't know anything about the area. The recruiter for the new job happened to mention the apartment complex she'd stayed at for several years, so I checked it out with several others. It was the only one that was even remotely suitable, and I'm so glad she mentioned it, otherwise we'd never have found it. We've really enjoyed living here.

My name's up there but no photos, so I'm going to toot my own horn a bit. I'm so proud of what I've done that I want everyone to see. :)

I like the chocolate stain. We combined it with pumpkin-pie-orange in our bedroom and it looks great.

@luvdecor: We've had the WE overlapping squares headboard and a low frame for about a year and it's working out well. They seemed to have solved their sturdiness issues. My only complaint is that the finish cracked in last winter's dry weather, leaving pine-colored lines. I haven't found a furniture pencil in the right shade to fill them in yet. They're not immediately noticeable, but they're there.

We're taking our final photos right now. I'm so excited to show everyone! The study looks like a completely different room, and the kitchen has perked up nicely.

Yeah, I'd be worried about the lead in antique pewter, too. There's a reason they're not in use any more.

We're starting to wrap things up. The biggest thing for us was painting the study and kitchen, so now that those are done we're down to smaller things. Unfortunately, I had the worst timing ever and chose to do the Cure in a length of time during which a) I've been sick several times and b) I've had a great deal of emotional upheaval due to my parents' separation and continuing issues. I'd planned to do a lot of small things this weekend, but may not be able to work just due to the amount of emotional pressure I'm currently under.

My dad is going to be visiting next weekend (and my mother the weekend after), so I've got a lot of incentive to have everything finished anyhow. I'm glad I went ahead and did the Cure this time around, but I wish I'd had more time and mental energy to focus on it. I think we made great progress with the work we did on the study and kitchen, but I'd fallen so far behind on regular cleaning that I ended up working from home on Thursday and cleaning for seven straight hours!

I'm definitely looking forward to posting photos of the finished study. I'm so, so happy with it. We still need to put up curtains, but that's about it.

I love this office so much just the way it is! The only things I would change are the very small print on the wall and the mirror.

Wow! I'm so excited to have our place featured a second time. I feel like I'd better work hard to have an apartment worthy of the honor when it's finished. :)

Last weekend contained the biggest part of our physical efforts for the Cure. Getting the paint color wrong was a huge exercise in frustration - we had friends over to help paint and everything, but when the two coats of green (Behr Emerald Lake) were up, they looked terrible. I think I said on my blog that it was like standing in a green Skittle. We trekked back out to Home Depot and ended up with Ralph Lauren Alpine Pool instead. (The photo at the very top of this page shows our study with one coat of Alpine over two of Emerald. We did do a second coat and that smoothed out all the unevenness of the color.)

I'm really, really happy with the second paint color, though. It conveys the forest feeling I was going for and it's very soothing.

I really, really had to push my husband to get him to give up his ratty old college desk, which I feel kind of bad about. He loves the new desk, though, so it's okay. The whole room looks completely different, much more professional and "us." Our friend J. who came to help paint wasn't there for the second day of painting: when she saw the photos of the finished room she couldn't believe how different it looked. Oddly, though rearranging the desks to face each other gave us MORE room rather than less, and we each have a nice little corner plus a perfectly adequate walkway, not cramped at all.

I hadn't planned to throw a party at the end of the Cure, since our circle of friends aren't generally the type to do dinner parties (and we don't have a dining table anyhow), but it turns out that we will have company that last weekend. My dad's going to be in town and will be staying with us, so that's good incentive to have everything done.

You'd have to be really careful with this or it would quickly start looking dorm-ish.

WOW! Someday when I'm rich and, uh, have a lot of time on my hands, I'd love to do this. It's the sort of effect I'm trying to create, in a very simple paint-and-curtains way, in our study.
