Buffalo Trace is a great distillery with beautiful grounds and an awesome selection of bourbons. I did a tour there with industry once and it was awesome. So happy to see it on the list.

When we do a biiiiig family celebration (i.e. the entire extended family, which amounts to almost 50 people) we do a turkey because enough people are there to eat it and we use the carcass to make soup the next day. But when it’s just our immediate area family (about ten of us, plus kids) it’s not worth it. We don’t love eating turkey leftovers enough. Plus we have a great recipe for bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin that I’ve been making for a few years now that’s become something of a tradition. Pork feels autumnal enough and it’s way more delicious than turkey!

Seriously. This baby shower totally wins the internet for the day. I'm crossing my fingers that when my sister eventually gets knocked up the timing will be right to steal the idea!

Ha! We have the Malm. We bought the Prince Lionheart corner guards someone mentioned up thread loooong before we had our baby (now 15 months). I bonked myself on the edges so many times I needed the corner guards to save my legs!

Better yet, get your hands on some Chartreuse VEP. It'll set you back significantly more ($175-200) but it's sooooo good and it would probably last forever... if you could keep it that long.

I think bourbon and I think southern food... Ham biscuits, pimento cheese (which you could put on some GF crackers or something), maybe some pulled pork/corn bread/collards/baked beans?

I can't believe there are only five comments to this post... I made this the other night and, with a few modifications (the addition of a cup of oats instead of flour, using all whole wheat flour instead of AP), it will be replacing my go-to crisp recipe. This recipe is awesome. Awesome I say!

Or, if you're super cheap/poor... buy some budget yarn (Cascade 220 is a great starter yarn) and some budget needles and teach yourself! There are tons of videos on youtube and ravelry.com is a great (free) resource, too.

If you want to go the class route... I highly highly recommend a sock class. I took one at another LYS when I was living in Philadelphia and it was great. Sock-knitting skills are really useful because they can be applied to a lot of different kinds of projects and even in a basic sock class you learn a LOT.

That green cabinet is truly fantastic. I almost never click through these tours but this one was way too cute to pass up. Thanks for the tour!

@abby: yaaaaay! After I finished season 1 (what seems like oh so long ago...) I was devastated to find out that I'd have to wait until January 2012 for season 2. Blerg. At least now I know I'm waiting for something awesome!

Not a window, but our solution might work: we have a furnace in our main room that gets pretty hot and has nasty corners. We ultimately ended up just putting a gate around it and using the space around it for random storage of non-flamable things.... You could put a short gate around the window and then maybe place hanging storage within the gate so you don't lose the space. Good luck!

I third the rec for Jeni's. My sister in law and her family live in Ohio and they get credit for introducing us, but hubs is now a bonafide addict... he got Jeni's for father's day and I think that may be an annual tradition.

Tell me more about this minimal baby proofing.... My little one took his first steps yesterday and now I'm feeling a little antsy about our semi-baby-proofed house. We've basically corralled all of our super horrible things (cleaners, sharp objects, heavy pointy things, whatever) into no-go parts of the house and I went through and did a tug-test on anything and everything dangly to make sure it wouldn't tumble on his wee head. But other than that... Meh?

As to the actual question: could you do hanging lanterns instead? I saw a post on some design website a fairly recently where they stapled the cords to the wall in sort of artsy line designs. Of course, now I can't find the post, but if you have walls that will take tacks/staples and you don't mind making a million little holes, it looked like a good way to get cords off the floor and keep them contained.

We're fortunate enough that nights here are fairly cool, even in summer, so we often put things outside to start the cooldown process before chucking them in the fridge. (vs. the DIY ice paddle, but in the event of a super warm evening, I'm definitely going to give that a try.)

@rockettsingh89: I've been using this method (and LOVING it!) for the past month or two and I've found that folding in extras right after the second mixing (before the 2-hour/overnight freeze) works best. The ice cream is just soft enough to get a good mix but not so soft that everything sinks to the bottom. Mix for 5 minutes per the instructions, fold in crunchies, freeze, done. :)

I know I'm coming a few days late to this, but I'm not seeing it so I have to add another alternative: Preparation H. I've never had this problem because, like some other posters, I don't have much of a problem with peppers and I've never been unfortunate enough to have pepper juice seep into a papercut or some other non-visible injury... but my mom accidentally nicked herself with a jalapeno-laden knife and after trying everything she found an internet suggestion for Preparation H. She said it worked like a charm.

We also used disposables for the first few weeks (birth weight was 6lbs 12 oz, so it was definitely a size issue... though I may invest in newborn cloth the next time around). We also still use disposables for nighttime because we were getting an ammonia stink in the morning. :( But a 40 pack lasts a loooong time at that rate, so I feel ok about it.

Anyway, I tried almost every style of diaper out there -- all in ones, pockets, fitteds, etc. -- and ended up loving just plain old prefolds the most. Over 12+ months, they have held up the best and are pretty easy to use with a Snappi. Interestingly enough: they are also hubby's favorite.

As far as the poo... we have a dedicated poo spatula next to the toilet. Gross? Yes. But, as I remind my toddler every time he goes: everybody poops. So there it is. I guess it's no more disgusting than a sprayer, which I avoided because sprayer + my lack of coordination = likely spraying poo all over the place...

@fennpepper: I have a 2.6 meter Girasol wrap with fringe that I often wear as a scarf. 2.6 meters is a little long scarf wise, but I think anything shorter would be too short to carry my 22 pounder.

Anyway, Girasol is a brand of baby wrap and it should pop up in google. They have tons of really pretty colors. I bought mine used from the baby wearer forums, but there are plenty of vendors out there. :)
