I agree that stylistically the renovation has a 60s feel, but the bones of the apartment are older, and that will always influence how the space feels overall. I think the table by the windows is a great mix of styles that call out specific dates in design history - the strong vertical of the early 20th C. windows, the curvy little table, and the Saarinen chairs mix together perfectly. @Portlandvegan - there are community composting sites in the Kerns and Buckman neighborhoods, courtesy of Village Building Convergence (http://sites.google.com/site/pdxcommunitycompost/). During upheaval like a move and a relationship shift, I think it's important to consider how your books support your identity. Books that give you a sense of context and personal history (old editions you've proudly discovered), that reflect the richness of your own mind and interests (deeply geeky stuff on wildly divergent topics), books that have changed you (new ideas, touch-stones you keep coming back to), can act as a sort of physical reminder of your inner self. For me, having that reminder has been hugely reassuring as other parts of my life have changed drastically, with moves across the country and in and out of apartments and relationships.
