I keep a computer file for special occasion meals (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, etc.) That way I can replicate it again the next year if it was a hit.

I love this idea as well. juliaonhamilton - good point that I hadn't thought of, I might have to research this a bit more before busting out the french doors.

Hmm, I like the two duvets in one cover idea - filing that away. I will have to sneak the second one in though because my husband would go nuts if he knew I was putting yet another layer on the bed. I don't love tons of pillows, but I do love layers of sheets, blankets and duvets.

Very well done. I would be interested in the cost of this home vs. a similar sized home built "the old fashioned" way. And how the photovotaics, wind turbine, etc. will help them recoup those costs. Maybe it is on the website, I haven't gone there yet.

I would love a copy of the Petrie residence, I have always wanted to design a similar house for myself.

I am doing a burlap cornice in a kitchen this week. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

I just finished using Behr's new paint and primer in one on a bright red bathroom. I was painting it a slate blue, it covered in one coat. That would at least minimize your effort. They also sell small sample pots so you could try out a few to prevent another wrong color choice. I would agree with everyone that is saying paint the cabinets first and then repaint so you only have to do it once.

For boxes, I have used these for a client before:

The uline website is a bit boring, but with some digging you can find some unexpected stuff.

I agree with most posters that this piece is best left alone. I would change the knobs to something interesting and unexpected and put a thick glass top (like 3/4") on the top. That will protect it and add a contemporary element.

I have that same photo (for my husband, a Chicago Transplant) hanging on an orange wall. It looks pretty good. I agree with everyone though, the best part of black and white photos/posters is they go with most anything.

Good luck!

I met Thomas Phesant a few months ago at an event and he was one of the nicest psudo-celebrity designers I have ever met. That always makes me feel better selecting his furniture for a client.

I vote for a deep well applied orange paint. It looks like one of the drawers is a replacement, so staining wouldn't work.

I am so envious, these are my dream chairs. I would love to find these chairs for a bargain on ebay or craigslist. I like them both ways, thanks for sharing.

A friend of mine has a book in her entryway called "A Good House is Never Done". I have embraced that philosophy for my home as well as my clients. I think most homes look great if the owner is constantly freshening things. Changing out pillows for something trendy can make a space look different without a large investment. Rooms look dated when the owner becomes complacent, letting things be for years at a time.

That said, I was looking at Arch Digest from 15 or 20 years ago and many of the rooms still worked really well. I felt like the designer/architect designed from a historical perspective. Not looking at things that are considered timeless now, but actually looking to the past for inspiration (possibly from the era of the home was built).

I like the rug you have chosen, but I don't think it is particularly livable. I like these with the new furniture:

I am dying to find an old building and repurpose it as a home. I would love an old schoolhouse, firehouse, warehouse, etc. This post is both inspiring and intimidating. What a lot of work!!

I recently found a MCM credenza that was used in an office. It has sliding doors so they don't open into the room when you are using something inside. I put the DVD player and TIVO/satellite receiver on one shelf and that left tons of space for DVDs and CDs. It took searching for months on Craigslist to find exactly what I wanted, but because the people that were selling couldn't think of a purpose for the credenza, they were selling it for $75 just to get it out of their garage. Then when I told them what we were using it for, I think they kind of wanted to keep it and use it for the same thing!
