I'm contemplating switching to Cricket or Virgin Mobile, who offer Pay-As-You-Go plans. You buy the phone up front, then pay $55 monthly, unlimited minutes and data, with no contract. It's a high initial cost, the phone costing $500+, but much cheaper monthly cost, and no long term commitment. Cricket gets the iPhone 5 later this month. Virgin currently only offers the iPhone 4, but I bet the 5 will come soon.

I have been an Apple user for twenty years, and still think they make the best gadgets. But I hate the way the company is squashing competitors. Many of these patents just seem ludicrous to me. It's anti-competitive, and I think that is bad for everybody. Part of why Apple holds an emotional place in people's lives is that they represent creativity and innovation, and for a long time they were the little guy going up against the giants. Apple's current behavior is hurting its brand for me.

I find it interesting that he is still using that Apple display, keyboard and mouse released in 1999. They are beautifully designed, but I assume he has at least upgraded his CPU!

And man, I agree with englishdaffodil: changing that carpet and rug would be a great way to improve the room without drastically altering the wood look.

Don't do it!!!

If it were me, I would brighten the room by hanging some interesting paintings on the walls, adding some pieces, etc. But once you paint that gorgeous wood, you can't get it back.

Or, how about a white wash that lets the wood grain show through. The natural grain is so beautiful and good for the soul.

OK, that lead photo is not going to tempt me to drink goat's milk. It's got all the imagery I do not want to be thinking about if I'm getting ready to drink some goat's milk. Maybe I'm just squeamish. But there's a reason a bottle of goat's milk usually has a picture of a friendly cartoon goat's face rather than, say, the business end of the goat being tugged by an ungloved hand. I'm just saying.

Such a gorgeous home, really. Of course the natural light everywhere is wonderful. It's modern without looking sterile, because of the mixture of textures. For me, it's that balance between tidy and cluttered. And the pops of red color are great. Everything is within that red color scheme, but it's done with subtlety. You can tell they pay close attention to the details of this home, but that they also really live in it. Definitely can learn a lot from what you guys did with this house, J and J!

Hey, I'm a moaner and groaner, what can I say? I'm not trying to ruin anybody's nostalgia. I just think Americana is a little bit more complicated than that photo suggests. America is a wonderful, diverse thing. Always has been. OK, sermon is over. Happy Fourth, everybody!

I want to add that building something can be cheaper, and can give you something unique and very satisfying, so it's win, win. I am not a carpenter, or even a handyman, but I decided to try building my son's bed when he grew out of his toddler bed. I did a lot of searching online until I found a plan that suited my tastes--simple, modern, utilitarian--and that I thought was within my abilities--no power saw use, for example. I figured, hey, it's a boy's bed, why not experiment and see if I can do it myself? The bed turned out pretty good, and my son likes the fact that daddy built it for him. I also got a lot of pride over doing something for myself and trying something new.

Gaining some confidence, later on, when my wife and I upgraded our bed, we splurged a bit to buy a latex mattress, but I built the bed. Again, it was cheap, and took a little thinking and effort, but now we have this rather unique bed and it has really made the bedroom ours. I even felt confident enough to modify the original plan a bit. We love our bed, and I think it's my favorite thing in the entire house, now. I definitely show it off when we have company.

I am certainly tempted to lay down some dough for an Eames chair, but I honestly think that every time I looked at it, I would think, man that is beautiful, but is it really worth $800? Whenever I look at my bed, I think, that is beautiful, and I built it! You can't beat that.

We made a box robot costume this past October. My four-year-old still wears it once in a while, and it's on permanent display in his room.

This is such a refreshing read, perfect for a lazy Sunday morning that is quickly dissolving into a moderately busy Sunday afternoon.

A couple of weekends ago I made a big pot of split pea soup and had a similar satisfied all-day reverie. Soup requires more chopping and such, and I burst into sobs for a while while slicing up the onion, but after that it's just a lot of occasional monitoring and stirring as everything gradually transforms. No beautiful clay pot, either: a crock pot, and a rice cooker. I made way too much, but we got two wonderful meals out of it and leftovers for the next week.

I'm no cook. I, too, am in a rat race every day, working and parenting and husbanding. For me, a pot of slow cooking stuff is indeed magical.
