This is such a refreshing read, perfect for a lazy Sunday morning that is quickly dissolving into a moderately busy Sunday afternoon.

A couple of weekends ago I made a big pot of split pea soup and had a similar satisfied all-day reverie. Soup requires more chopping and such, and I burst into sobs for a while while slicing up the onion, but after that it's just a lot of occasional monitoring and stirring as everything gradually transforms. No beautiful clay pot, either: a crock pot, and a rice cooker. I made way too much, but we got two wonderful meals out of it and leftovers for the next week.

I'm no cook. I, too, am in a rat race every day, working and parenting and husbanding. For me, a pot of slow cooking stuff is indeed magical.

Personally, I would never let an onion or garlic clove near my guac. I would go even simpler than the recipe given: avocado, chopped tomato, lemon juice, and that's it. Maybe some cilantro. Anything stronger is only going to cover up the taste of the avocado. And if anything on the planet tastes better than an avocado, I haven't found it yet.

Stanza is one of my favorite apps. Sadly, it looks like they are going to stop updating it. Fingers crossed that this app stays alive.

You know, I am usually pretty open-minded, but this is kind of a silly thing, isn't it? It can be viewed as a piece of art, but surely not used as a table. Maybe I am more of a philistine than I think I am.

I really appreciate the something-old-something-new approach. If you demolish the original and start from scratch, how "green" would that be? This is an approach that inspires me and my old conventional, boring floor plan and construction.

I love the bare wood and metal aesthetic, and the well-worn floors, with all that natural light and open space. Looks great, guys.

Um, Steve Jobs retired.

Look, I am a Mac user by choice, because I prefer the UI, and the devices have a style that I find aesthetically pleasing. It's just a matter of taste. I don't consider other Mac users part of my extended family, and I don't look upon PC users as philistines. Apple and Microsoft are both enormous corporations that make money by selling us their products. They both produce products that get the job done in very similar ways. Okay. What, are we all supposed to build our own computers?

The Mac vs PC debate is tiresome. It's like Coke vs. Pepsi. Why would anybody care? Use whatever you want, and let's not read too much into what product a person prefers. It's just personal preferences.

Regarding the advice to be patient and find one on Craigslist, I would like to add that that depends very much on where you live. I have been checking out Craigslist in San Antonio for probably five years now, and have never seen one of these chairs. Some communities just don't have a high end antiques floating around.

What has changed about my reading habit is that I read more. I always have a little library on my phone, all day, every day, so I am always prepared if some unexpected free time presents itself. I am finally almost done with Shelby Foot's The Civil War: A Narrative, an enormous three volumes that always seemed daunting in their physical form. As ebooks, they made for surprisingly quick reading.

Also, I have read more "classics" over the last couple of years. They are free! (Thanks, Michael Hart and Project Gutenberg. Rest easy, friend.)

And congrats, Maggie's parents. My wife and I sometimes have a hard time remembering what life was like before our kids. For me, dogs played a major role. Parenting is never-ending hard work, lots of moments of inexpressible joy, a total transformation of your focus. We did not have anywhere near the obstacles you faced to become parents, but we do know how lucky you are. Here's to Maggie!
