Tube amp? Really?

Well, it's 4:18pm.

I've lost just about an entire day to this blog. No complaints.

Ugh. Jensen. One of the worst names in audio. This atrocity is pretty much guaranteed to chew up vinyl. Save a few more weeks of tips from your bar-back job and pick up a used SL-1200 for around $200. Instant audiophile, hipster, DJ, and street cred. Your 18th pressing garage-sale-find Velvet Underground records will thank you.

What, no track bike valet? Bad form, Facebook. Bad form.

Anyone know of a desktop version?

Can't go wrong with the SR-60's but, as mentioned, they're open-air which means a lot of sound leaks out, and a lot of sound leaks in. Fine for listening alone in the living room, but you're sure to annoy your office mates.

Denon and Beyerdynamic offer some great closed cans, albeit out of the price range quoted above.

Check out www.head-fi.org, an indispensable resource to all things headphone related.

Don't be tempted by "computer" speakers or Bose.

For $200, you can get yourself a used pair of KRK RP5's which are damn good active monitors for the price. Studio monitors are specifically designed for near-field listening, which is something I think a lot of desktop audiophiles overlook when buying speakers.

The other plus about active monitors is built in amplification.

Bear in mind that with better speakers, you'll be revealing every flaw in your source. Especially when listening to poorly encoded MP3's (anything below 320kbps).

This is two blocks from my home, and I'm really not looking forward to these jerks ruining the neighborhood for a few months. We've already got tour busses coming past the house on S St.

Sigh.

Might make for an interesting RAID cluster..
