I love the long "dresser" in the living room, across from the couch. Above it says that it is "vintage." Any idea where to find a long dresser like that?

Your freezer is as small as mine. I would recommend forgoing jars and other containers, as they take up too much space for what you have in mind. I now freeze in freezer bags, which I fill and then lay flat in the freezer. When frozen you can stack up a nice pile, side by side, somewhat like a bunch of LPs. That way you have a lot of food in the freezer.

If you look at photographs of artists and writers from 50 to 100 years ago, you will see that they all "dressed" for the day before they started work in their home studio. I don't know if the men showered and shaved -- in Europe not even hot water at home was common at the end of World War II, thus the beards -- but women and men alike made themselves "presentable." Though one reads about solitary artists and writers, many nevertheless had structured days, which would have included lunches with fellow writers or colleagues. In this connection, people also dressed for dinner. Whether getting out of one's pajamas before sitting down to work improves one's productivity remains unanswered in the comments. I have the feeling (in my own case as well) that we stay-at-home writers inevitably rationalize our choice of attire.

It would be interesting to see an article on this site about women who cook every night or most nights.

My husband, who died 20 months ago, always made this drink for me when we had "horses ovaries" at home, but he used dry vermouth. Every time I have a cocktail, I ask for a Rob Roy to see if it can be as good as he used to make.

My husband was the cook in our household. When he died a year and a half ago I learned to cook from the internet. I needed to eat, of course, but cooking was a way of keeping me in touch with him. He had been a wonderful, inventive cook, and the table always looks beautiful. So, yes, cooking has been a meditative activity. I like the way you speak of "the kitchen," however; that is slightly different from cooking. Aside from the food preparation, there is the grocery shopping and then finding a place to put the groceries afterward. There is the arrangement of the dishes, cutlery, pots, and pans and so on, not to forget the shelf liners. Then there is the floor: constantly in need of cleaning. I also need a place to put my iPod and small speaker, so that I can listen to music or podcasts while I cook. So many things to think about and arrange in the kitchen itself.

Thanks for your long-ago-posted comment! It is very hot in NYC the past few days, and I would like to give up stove cooking and turn to the rice cooker.

I tried it with ricotta last night, mostly because it seemed a good opportunity to use up a small supply. So-so. I think I will return to my cheddar cheese standby.
