I can't speak for others, but the big problem for me was not the homeowner but the person who did the tour photos - what we like to see is flow, how one room leads to another, how the space is used, an overall picture, as that is essential in design, and unfortunately in this tour there is none of that.

that said, I totally understand Pomona because my current "style" is a sort of boho brocante melange - I love flea markets, but am not such a fan of that "merci" store as it is not really French - and I like the things she's done. I only wish the house tour had been presented in a way that would give us viewers more of a perspective on this Toronto space and the way it is used.

So nice, I'd love to spend an afternoon here yarn shopping, or take a class - this makes me nostalgic for the States as there is just nothing elsewhere that compares to the US craft scene.

Can we please have a spring cleaning cure? or something? I've been feeling this doldrum/blues type thing ever since the January cure ended.

I think there may be some photos missing (again).

I was looking into this type of shelving a while back and here are two that I found:
Cubit - http://www.cubit-shop.com/en#3
Brickbox - http://www.brickbox.es/bookshelf-stackable-modular-shelving-library
but then I wound up getting some Expedits instead (and I'm still sad that they are going to be discontinued...)

Beautiful space, thanks for sharing! And also, thank you to the person who did the photos for providing such a well constructed tour. It really gives a sense of how the apartment works overall - and the photo of James sitting at his dining table is very excellent, it should be a painting.

"I love design when it shows struggle and flaws. When it reflects the human condition"

and I love house tours where the residents have something intelligent and inspiring to say, thank you! (and the space is really nice as well)

in French I would say that it's all about the "contact avec la matière" - I like the physical aspects of diy and crafting, the color, texture, and smells of paint, paper, wood, or wool (etc.). It brings me to a much happier place and makes me feel so much more grounded. And, then I think of all the generations of people who made things and repaired things and I'm happy to be among them.

no shoes for us, I hate shoes and if I could I would never ever wear them anywhere. The first thing I do when I walk in the door is take off my shoes. If it gets really cold I wear socks or comfortable slippers around the house. That said, if delivery people come to the house I do not ask them to take their shoes off.

I can't agree with this. To me the ideal is to have everything white (or some really light neutral) and then take your time deciding on the final color from there. Any strong colors you keep on your walls could potentially clash with your test colors and give you a false idea of the finished effect, whereas with white you can just buy testers and paint right on them.

Excellent idea, I'm planning a stencil project soon and found this place that offers so many interesting and beautiful choices http://www.stencil-library.com/ - they also have a blog with informative articles about actually doing the stenciling too.

there seem to be only 8 photos and two are close-ups of old cameras. How is this a house tour?

wow, this is amazing and I can barely believe that it is from 1910, +100 years old! and so beautiful! so much nicer than that nasty subway tile people are always trying to fob of as historic.

I think the wisest thing would be to do some research on the period, figure out where this fabulous tile fits in, and then take some time to make an intelligent and informed decision on where to go with it.

and then maybe, finally, oh happy day! we will have kitchens and bathrooms full of this lovely authentically historic, colorful, and fun stuff and will no longer be forced to admire boring rectangles of cold restroom white with grey grout (yuck).

all of the above and also it's empowering. And, the research I do for whatever project I'm working on enables me to be a better judge of good work and more appreciative of it as well - because I know first hand the skills involved.

thanks for this motivation and I totally agree with no. 1 - during the January cure I found several rolls of trash bags that had fallen behind the shelving unit in the kitchen so I haven't had to buy any for a while
