I have the Ballard Designs one and although it's surely not an heirloom piece, I really adore how it pulls a traditional element into my otherwise modern living room. Really good purchase.

BUT Ballard sold my name and now I get tons of crap mail, among these being Prevention. Thanks Ballard. Just kidding. No thanks.

Love this thread, and really want to hear others chime in. Should the landlord be responsible for caulking/recaulking? I've been in this unit for five years and have recaulked the tub myself once. It needs it again, and I've asked my landlord and received no reply. Isn't this just basic maintenance?

I like how you think, Tinka! Folks, how is somebody paying a markup on ebay any different than somebody paying markup because it's missoni!?

If someone's willing to pay, somebody will be willing to sell.

I must say that having used many combo washer/dryers in Europe I have never encountered a duo that either cleans OR drys well. Surely the energy-hoggers of America make up for their appetite by finishing the job in 45 minutes? I have literally waited half days while laundry "dried", which meant they were about 70% there and steaming hot. Europe is great for lots of stuff but not this.

God, I was going to write and ask the SAME thing. I mean, it's not hard to imagine that with everybody having flat-screen tv's and low credenzas that we all have the same problem. I even have the salon style pictures on the opposite wall too! Just means we all have great taste.

Always had them because in a place like Seattle, we have to enjoy whatever light we get.

GOD I hate stupid, oversized text on walls, either in the more creative graffiti form, or in the form of banal faux-oak signs that proclaim "DREAM" or "LAUGH". I dream of a day when I don't have to laugh at the idiots that put this stuff up on their walls.

For most people, these would all qualify as improvements to an otherwise un-livable rental space, and an investment in the property that the managers do not have the time or inclination to make. As long as you're not ripping out carpet, go for it.

I did the same, and my landlord was incredibly pleased at what I had done and used my apartment as a model from then on.

Yes, there is a difference between tagging and graffiti, mainly that tagging doesn't utilize talent. It's quick, dirty, and ugly. And taggers have no ethics about where to tag. I don't know about where you live, but in Seattle, we rarely see beautiful, colorful murals like the ones above, and what we do see is ugly, streaky, drippy "tags" on people's fences, retaining walls, and even siding.

Also this bull**** about tagging to prevent gentrification has got to go. This is like littering to prevent high personal property tax.
