Lovely sofa -- I adore the upholstery, so much character -- and it would be so expensive to reupholster.. It's my experience that men don't like pillows at all. So: Nix 'em altogether. Focus on darker curtains, a rug underneath, and coffee table and lamps that pick up the lovely wood legs of the sofa. For the walls -- darker paint -- something to pick up the greens in the sofa -- also would add masculinity. Dare I say it: Avocado -- yes! With this sofa, you are admitting you dig the retro -- so go for it.

Here's another idea, for the record. These folks had the same style of cabinets -- the 80s melamine with the brown oak (?) handles. They painted the handles red and voila, the cabinets fit right into their country kitchen theme. See story here: http://retrorenovation.com/2012/05/28/greg-and-tammys-red-kitchen-remodel-full-of-retro-charm/

So perhaps a renter with these style cabinets could cover the handle parts only (with some sort of sticky vinyl or temp-paper as mentioned) to try and shift the look.

Nope. The research I've read indicates that, when the additional installation costs are added in, these won't save enough $$ over their lifespan to pay for themselves compared with traditional tanks. And since money is a darn good proxy for carbon emissions, I think that means these things will generate more carbon than traditional.

When Betty Crafter and Eartha Kitsch went to *update* their original knotty pine kitchens, they kept the cabinets, replaced other worn surfaces and added light and color -- their kitchens are happy delights. Even if the KP has seen its day in this owner's kitchen, maybe the new owners can pick up some color and material ideas from these projects -- especially if they want to stay connected to the home's original retro vibe. You can see both projects on http://knottyisnice.com/

I also agree -- the appliances may make a retro fan very happy -- so take them to the Re-Store or put them on craigslist. Note, old refrigerators may or many not use more energy, the key issue seems to be whether they have auto-defrost (uses more energy).

Finally, haha, I have a popular story about how to RECREATE Betty Draper's kitchen today! I even like this owner's wallpaper, from what I can see. Alas, I am the only one, but I am crazy that way ;)

Keep it the way it is! Even the wall-to-wall carpet is fine: That color is ASCENDENT. The minute you take it out, it's going to be back in fashion. See my other little website, Knotty Is Nice, all about Knotty Pine and wood paneling and why is it WONDERFUL the way it is! http://knottyisnice.com/
