Sorry Wes, but the lead post actually did say it was affordable: "Follow the jump to see the more affordable interpretation...". Plus, the end of the 2nd paragraph says "... down to only $4555", which seems to imply that $4555 is a bargain.

Another plug for purging. Freecycle is a great place to get rid of anything and everything: http://www.freecycle.org

As for decor, a dark floor against light colored walls and furniture can really make a place feel more spacious. Works really well in my not-quite-300-sq-ft apartment. I have white couches and light wood shelving and tables so the contrast makes everything looks like it's floating while the floor sort of falls away (um, visually).

Having furniture with legs helps a lot.

NOTE TO THE EDITORS: I love this thread. Any chance you'll focus more on (truly) small spaces in the future? The solutions that work in the tiniest spaces are often the most innovative... and they'll work in larger spaces, as well. :)

(to paraphrase Inigo Montoya): They keep using this word "budget"... I do not think it means what they think it means.

GORGEOUS! It may not be a small space, but it's very well done.

On the issue of this being a "house tour"... does it seem a little odd to anyone else that houses are featured so prominently on a site called "apartment" therapy?

Sorry... didn't see dM's much more succinct post before posting my long-winded one (which has a typo... it should say "whether vegetarian hosts are obliged to serve meat").

Patrick #2, as to your question about whether vegetarian hosts are obliged meat:

Since most humans who eat meat are not strict carnivores but rather omnivores, serving a veggie-based meal would not preclude them from eating. Whereas serving a meat-based meal to vegetarians would. Besides, quite often I find the vegetarian dishes at parties are the ones that get scarfed up first... by the omnivores! Veggie fare these days is pretty damn tasty. Just stop by your local Trader Joe's if you need proof.

Brilliant idea, Randi!

And Yvette, you're a shining example that the surest way to get what you need is to give it.

Great post.

Great post Nina79.

This place left me cold, too. I think the real disconnect for me was that there's SO much kitsch and quirk that it feels like it's trying too hard to be "interesting". I'm curious how much of this stuff has any real, personal meaning or sentimental value to Wendi and how much she actively collected specifically to accessorize her home. (Though I do appreciate her eco-friendly manner of collecting, especially her support for local businesses.)

I've always found that homes decorated with items that have come into the residents' lives organically (e.g., as gifts, family heirlooms, souvenirs of their own travels, or mementos of their own experiences), just ooze warmth and originality. Effortlessly. Vintage or not, dead animals or not, character is something you just can't fake. Not even in LA.

Despite the MAJOR disruption to both local businesses and residents, I wouldn't mind dealing with the Sunset Junction insanity once a year if it weren't for the fact that the organizers are charging people $20 a head to enter a PUBLIC street. WTF is that? Gotta be illegal. But they're making a killing and I'm sure certain council members are getting a nice cut... and that's all that really matters, right?

I adore those vintage mail caddies, but the picture rail idea is absolutely ingenious! Since I don't have a picture rail, it spurred me to try the same thing with the moulding around the inside of my closet/dressing room door... and it works fabulously! (Fortunately—or not—I don't own enough shoes to take up much more space than that anyway.)

Amen, Sherry!

And Merriam-Webster seems to concur:
giftn. Something voluntarily transferred by one person to another without compensation

I mean, really... have you ever heard anyone wax rhapsodic about "the spirit of getting"?
