couldn't agree more - why would anyone want to put themselves (further) into debt only for the privilege of giving the world the illusion of owning a house? You have to maintain that house, repair it or pay for the repairs, mortgage your life savings away just to keep afloat... who needs that kind of nightmare??

We rent and we will most likely continue renting - something is broken? Call the super or landlord and let them deal with the costs of having the plumbing fixed! :P

I agree with both commenters above - I am from Toronto as well and our green bins do take on many items you list as non-compostable... even used diapers and kitty/doggy litter!

too many knick-knacks for my liking but the overall look is lovely - I especially like the kitchen counters and layout! :)

We're currently in the process of downsizing and are sorting through our items as well.
Our clothes were all donated to our local donation depot.
Sell-able items were either placed on kijiji and craigslist and if they didn't sell online, we took them to the local swap shop.
We still have a few items that aren't selling and aren't accepted at the donation depot or the swap shop (like a beautiful wooden dining set with 6 chairs!) - we still have it posted in the hopes it will sell before our moving date, but time is running out... (we're in Toronto, ON Canada)
I really don't want to discard it, but not quite sure what to do with it if it doesn't sell! Time to look around for other alternatives I guess...

Good luck with your cross country move!
