i just painted my dining room. i wanted the perfect shade of light grey walls without any undertones.

i used google to search images of different paint colors from various brands. with the plethora of home blogs out there, i was able to find tons of pictures of the numerous colors i was considering. oftentimes, there are comments about the undertones, so i knew what to stay away from. this was the best way for me to see what entire rooms looked like in different shades of grey.

i ended up painting my dining room valspar blizzard fog. i love it.

this is what i would do:
(1) keep the original metal cabinet with sink - it's very retro-modern. (if anything, i would splurge to have it professionally re-painted.)
(2) get new, re-configured upper cabinets that go to the ceiling along the entire wall to provide a ton of storage. (remove the awkward one over the fridge that isn't accessible.)
(3) put a long, narrow stainless work table on the opposite wall for counter space. because it's freestanding, it will not visually take up a lot of space.
(4) use those ikea metal shelves above for storage, display wine or hang art.
(5) new floors can be done inexpensively with peal and stick vinyl tiles or you can splurge with wood to match the rest of the space - it won't be too expensive because it's a small space.
(6) not *every* kitchen needs to have expensive, high-end stainless appliances. use what you have.
(7) lastly, paint.

i have really admired these tri-fold mirrors... i would like to find an affordable vintage one, or make one myself.

please put the toilet seat down. thank you.

i like the ideas above about pics of old images from the building or period.

also, i agree that the fixtures are all too modern. look at something classic like waterworks for inspiration.

well said spacesha.

there is something great about being in another home and intuitively finding things vs haphazardly. it can be stressful even if at a subconscious level.

i love to be organized: a place for everything and everything in it's place. i also really like to limit the number of duplicate things in my house because I don't want to have to store it all... only one thing can be used at a time! i also don't have the extra money to splurge on "extra" stuff; i.e. sheets are expensive, i can't have 5 extra sets on hand. i simply can't afford it! i also don't want to over consume and accumulate stuff that becomes junk.

this is a good post. i need to show it to my boyfriend that tends to accumulate tons of everything from t-shirts, to towels, to beer glasses, to supplements! it drives me crazy!

we live in a small house. storage is minimal, belongings need to be minimal. imo.

i WANT to love a tour of a "1912 Craftsman cottage," but there are no architectural elements that resemble this.

i have never understood how ripping out an entire kitchen, bathroom (that tub!), and all the windows is considered green - that is so much waste! i would have saved all of those elements - those are some of my many favorites about old houses!!!

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has many ways to green a home and replacing the windows is NOT one of them. The R-value between old and new is minimal and definitely not a concern in a mild climate like many of you stated.

I have a 1927 bungalow. I am trying to preserve as much as possible, while making it more green and on a serious budget.

what a beautiful kitchen! i love all the original details.

there are inexpensive white appliance that would fit the space so much better. i would go with 20"-24"W. i love the look of vintage appliances, but the new ones are so expensive. you might be able to find a narrow vintage stove on craigslist for a good price. summit makes a good looking 24'W fridge and avanti makes sort of retro looking stoves.

i want to see the after pictures!

you might ask to do something about that floor, too.

i'm debating between the chimney hood and wall cabinet style vent right now!

yes, a chimney is more expensive, but a cabinet style requires additional cabinetry to cover the duct and it's not very functional space to use.

i want something creative...
