I grew up without a dryer, we always hung stuff outside (but living in southern california makes it a lot more feasible). I got used to having a washer and dryer and dishwasher in my last home, but I wasn't great about moving my stuff from washer to dryer or from dryer to closet. I now either use the one (frequently broken/mildly mildew smelling) w/d in my building or go to the laundromat. I pick the laundromat - I can read a book and get my laundry done in less than 2 hours.

I do miss the dishwasher though. I feel like I am forever washing dishes and probably use a ton more water.

My ex and I lived together in our house for almost a year before we were ready to sell and move out. I kept our bedroom, he moved into the office. The first thing I did was move stuff around the bedroom and rearrange it so it never felt empty or like it had ever been "ours". Then I basically lived in there and rarely used any of the common spaces of the house (except the kitchen and bathroom) until we sold the house and I moved into my own place. I think what saved me from being completely miserable was having one space in the house where I could retreat and where it was all mine.

I have successfully done this with different kinds of succulents. I have them in a window that gets bright morning light and they are thriving.

The only suggestion I have is to not over water. I water mine once a week, and not very much. About once a month, I give them a good amount of water (not drowning, but more than a few teaspoons) and it seems to work for me.

I live in the sprawling suburbs of LA...and therefore can't imagine anyone being "car-free"...but I love the walkableness of my neighborhood without feeling like I have to worry excessively about my safety when I'm out there walking.

I can appreciate the hard work and the art of the nail heads, but I wish it had been done to a different piece of furniture. Or maybe a canvas for the wall. Oh well. It's their piece of furniture, and it's certainly unique.

I especially love how you have hung your posters. I have so many concert posters that have languished in storage and I'm finally getting them out and putting them up. I can't afford to frame them, and the clip idea has worked for me. You have a beautiful home!

Very nice - and the bird by bird advice is great for me, since I just moved into my first solo apartment and I really want to make it my own.

Even though you might feel the bathroom is your biggest embarrassment, I think you've done a great job of embracing it and making it your own (even though it may not be ideal). I have the same issue with my rental bathroom.

Beautiful home - thanks for sharing :)

If you really clean and put some oil or varnish on those cabinets, that would improve the look of your kitchen too. They look a little dry.

I have kind of pinkish-yellow-white mottled tile counter tops in my rental that I can't do anything about, but once I cleaned up the cabinets, I notice them and not the tile.

@LyonStill - No, I haven't talked to the tenants - I haven't even really met them yet. I don't know what to say to them. They have lived there a long time, and I just moved in.

I just rented an apartment in a four-plex and have been there about a month. The neighbors across the hall from me are friendly and nice and the neighbors below them are distant but at least quiet.

HOWEVER, the ones directly below me sit on their patio (right below my bedroom window) and smoke cigarettes and drink beer well into the night most nights. There seems to be at least five or six adults at the apartment at any given time and since I like to keep my windows open almost all the time, I get to hear their conversations, smell their cigarette smoke, and listen to them open their Bud Light cans every night. I can't keep my bedroom window open at night or they keep me awake and the smoke REALLY bothers me.

I don't want to complain to the landlord (especially since he told me they have been long-term renters and he's known them a long time) and I don't know how to approach the tenants. Do I just keep my mouth shut and grin and bear it? Any advice would be appreciated.

I just sold my house that we scrimped and saved for YEARS to buy - and then found that with mortgage payments and general upkeep, we couldn't really afford the renovation projects that we envisioned when we bought it. So after years of living in that house, we had only made minor changes (or the major ones that we had to make but can't brag about, like patching the huge hole in the wall in the kitchen that was there when we moved in) that didn't increase the resale value of our house. Now I rent, I call the landlord when there's a problem, and I pay half as much as my mortgage. I felt pressured to buy a house by my in-laws, and while I loved my house, in Southern California, it's not always a good fiscal decision.

I have used Taxact for the last several years, starting when I was single and owned nothing, up through being married, owning a home, and having a child. I have always been very happy with the online software, the speedy direct deposit of my returns, and the price (under $20 to electronically file both federal and state returns!). I always file as soon as I receive my tax documents, and have my returns within two weeks.

I live in Southern California and just started renting. I'm paying around 40% of my take-home for my apartment which costs about half of what my mortgage cost (which is good, because I'm the only one paying rent!). You can find affordable places around the LA area (most apartments do not come with refrigerators, although some do), you just have to be persistent.

I have the same problem - beautiful mid century chairs (whose black vinyl seats also need recovering), and no table. I'm looking for something like this teak table with leaves, because my dining room is fairly small but for the few occasions where I have more people over than usual, we could make it work. My budget is limited, so I'm just scouring craigslist at the moment. I do like the table you have now, though.

On the day I signed my lease, which stipulated that I couldn't paint anything, I immediately pulled out the two medicine cabinets in the bathroom that were rusted and dingy inside. I took them to my mom's house and spray painted the insides a bright, clean white. The landlord came by to fix one last thing while I was re-installing them. He didn't notice a thing, but that one little thing made a huge difference to me. I think it's okay if you're improving something.
