That is really a pretty garden picture above. I love raised garden beds.

Thanks for sharing this article, though I'm not sure how I feel about his method. Any plants living where you are trying to grow seeds are going to compete for nutrients...

@YTess: I would have given money to see the cheese roll off the table... though not see it drop on your feet! The poor man must have been *mortified*, and I'm sure your feet hurt!

I agree though. 1)Serve it room temp. 2)Respect the texture and taste

Also, I feel like the idea of "wine bars that serve cheese plates" is a little overdone... not in the sense that I want to see the trend disappear (because I don't!! I love cheese!!) but I want to see an increase in the amount of sophistication with which the idea is executed. I want them to find some really awesome cheeses. To offer a plate of just goat cheeses... fresh, aged, and hard. Maybe match them with wines. Offer interesting sides.

Basically, don't treat me like a noob who can't identify an unripe brie.

Oh man, I *love* mixing things with yogurt.... it can be transformed from such a simple to such a luxurious treat.

I'm going to have to try that parfait.... I tried to pop amaranth a few years ago with no success, but I may have to try again.

This may be my favorite though:

Like many above, I have always frozen cooked pancakes, but was always kind of disappointed by their texture and flavor...

I will have to give this a try. Brilliant.

For me the pivotal moment came when I added vinegar to my pot--it just started working better and the eggs seemed more attractive. I don't taste the vinegar.

....though my eggs have never been as attractive as the ones pictured above :-(

Those are some delicious looking eggs, makes me want to go break into my fridge as we speak.

Haha, absolutely.

Especially if it allows me to eat more of this:

I think #1 from the "Two tone-shelving" is actually a great example of marrying the convenience of open shelving with the need to have most of your stuff behinds doors to avoid grease and dust. The cabinets have small slivers of open shelving--just enough for the most commonly used plates, bowls, and cups--and the rest is hidden behind cabinet doors with glass panels to decrease the visual weight of the cabinet. Also, the cabinets are white to balance the color on the bottom. Really, a brilliantly designed kitchen....

...other than those little motifs on the ceramic tiles, which aren't really to my taste.

But really, a fine job.

Canned beans, Jiffy corn muffin AND biscuit mixes, curry pastes...breadcrumbs (homemade crumbs have their place... but Panko is pretty awesome). McLawrey's chili seasoning mix. But that might be it...

But I don't think any boxed brownie mix can hold a candle to the Baker's "One Bowl Brownies" recipe from the inside of the Baker's Unsweetened Chocolate boxes. Takes 5 minutes to make, 40 to bake, and is damn tasty, and not oily like the boxed mixes.

Haha, I wrote a whole post on my need for a kitchen scoop back in December... but I almost exclusively use it for pulling flour and sugar out of their containers. I used to keep grains and beans in mason jars, but I would just pour our the amount I needed.

That is one photogenic cocktail. Here in Florida "winter" and "more citrus than you can fathom" are pretty synonymous... I imagine this is a great cocktail base for any type of citrus!!

Wow--the space looks so beautiful!!! I am really enjoying reading your experience with putting in an Ikea kitchen--I've always thought that was the best way to go, and you are really tipping the pendulum in its favor ;-) I cannot wait to see what the doors look like!! Semihandmade does some awesome work.

I've lived in 6 apartments over the past 8 years, and I've found that the biggest thing for me was finding a spot for all my stuff... specifically, my pots and pans. When I first moved into my current apartment, it was a disaster! All my (pretty heavy) pots and pans had to stack on top of one another, and the effort needed to move everything--though really, it was minimal--just seemed like such a mental roadblock to wanting to cook, or put the pans back away after everything was cleaned.

Once I hung the pots and pans on the wall, I found that was happy to get back in the kitchen, and the pots and pans found their way back to their homes promptly.

There were lots of other tweaks, to be sure--like carving out a spot for my cookbooks and wine--but keeping those primary tools available can be life-changing.

Usually I am all about durability and not having to buy something twice, so I never buy nonstick... but I have a cheap $20 nonstick square skillet that I love. You just can't make the same impromptu quesadilla at midnight without one. :-)

I love the chairs on the wall... especially the single red chair amidst the greys. It definitely adds flair. I also love that they were so fanatical about maximizing storage. My only hangup is the open shelving... how do you keep everything dust free!? I still haven't figured that answer out... and the day I do, I will convert my kitchen.

This weekend is going to be a good one for food...

Tonight of course is the fish fry at church. But tomorrow... I'm thinking maybe the chicken and lemon soup from the December edition of Martha Stewart Living, Roasted feta with fig-thyme compote, and a Bon Appetit recipe for gnocchi gratin with gorgonzola dulce... though I'll probably substitute bleu d'auvergne for the gorgonzola... 'cause that's what I got. Still trying to decide on an appropriately decadent dessert. Anything that results in more beautiful pictures for my blog and delicious food in my belly is a winning strategy in my book!
