I was told to follow the flow of traffic between the rooms. If the flow of traffic in your house has you going from the living room into the hallway most often (not sure where your doors are), paint the underside the color of the living room walls. If you enter from the hallway to go into the living room, then paint the underside the color of the hallway walls.

Another school of thought is to go with the lighter/more neutral of the two colors.

We went the no coffee table route as well. We did place a small rustic bench in front of our fireplace (we don't use the fireplace), which we are able to pull in front of the sofa when needed.

I think we have the same exact living room layout in our house. The door to the right of the fire place is our main entrance. In our house, the wall opposite the wall with 2 windows is our stairs to the 2nd floor.

We ended up putting the TV above the fireplace. We had no other place for it since we also had to fit our piano in the living room. Our sofa faces the fireplace and TV. The angle is okay if you're on the sofa, but it is hard to see the TV if you're sitting on the floor.

We just renovated our kitchen with Ikea cabinets and we love them. The standard soft close hardware is made by Blumotion, which is an upgrade for most other cabinet lines we looked at. When we looked at the prices, Ikea came out to almost half of the next cheapest line and none of my friends could believe it was Ikea when I told them. Even our contractor was surprised at the quality. There is a lot more assembly involved, but once you figure out the first box, the rest of them are easy. We are not DIY'ers by any means and we were able to get 14 cabinets assembled in a day. We used non-Ikea products for the rest of the kitchen, but we are really pleased with the results. Plus, with two active kids, we aren't as paranoid about the cabinets getting scratched or ruined...we know it can be replaced at a low cost.

We had a similar issue with beige floor tiles that had to stay. We ended up doing beadboard that will be painted off-white.
