This is a lovely sentiment for outside of the city, but I'm afraid it doesn't work well for Brooklyn. My neighbors have a private backyard, but rather than enjoy it, they insist on sitting out front - letting their dog go bonkers at every passing dog/human/shadow/windgust and their kids to scream and crash around. During the day, it's much less common for someone to be in the back of a brownstone than in the front, where living rooms are often located. I would paint it to match the radiator, and then cut a piece of wood to fit the top and paint it as well to have some extra hidden storage. The idea of lining it and using it for umbrellas is great too, but I'm always looking for a place to stash things, like off-season footwear! What To Do with Built-In Indoor Brick Planter? Bo, thank you for recognizing that "Noise can drive people crazy with stress"! For two years, I lived below a rambunctious 8 year old who would stomp-run from one end of the apartment to the other stopping only to pound on a piano while screaming "MA MA MA" because his mother was constantly on the telephone, ignoring him (he was so loud, we could hear his words clearly through the floor). It would go on for hours at a time. When his father was home, we wouldn't hear a peep! I was in a constant tense state, and lived with the worry that just as I was about to sleep or study, he would start up again. How Do I Deal with Neighbor's Excessive Noise Complaints?
