I've found that a lot of places that serve sangria, serve it with 2 of the small cocktail straws in the wine glass. I use these straws like chopsticks, and go to town! Easier than trying to stab the fruit with them.

I grew up across the street from a dairy farm. While my family no longer had animals, we were completely surrounded by fields as well. I never got completely used to the smell, but it never stuck to us or our house. Fertilizing doesn't last forever, it'll be over before you know it.

I've found a lot of great recipes on 5 dollar dinners. When I buy meat, I buy in bulk and freeze what I don't need right away in individually portioned bags. Find casseroles that have meat, veggies, and a starch (and freeze half so you don't get sick of it too quickly). Also - adding an egg to ramen is delicious, cheap, and easy.

As for particular pantry items that you need - it depends based on how much space you'll have in your kitchen. My kitchen is so small, that I only keep salt, pepper, olive oil, a box of spaghetti, a jar of pasta sauce, a package of ramen, chicken breast (in the freezer), eggs, and milk at all time. Other items are purchased based on recipes I might need for the week, or spices, etc. that are left over from previous recipes. Keeping other things that I might need in the future on hand is not a high priority in my single cupboard kitchen.

My landlord would FREAK if I did something like that, even if we did promise to paint over it before we left. I agree with hitch though, chalk dust in the kitchen (esp over the counters) would not go over well with me.
