oh I absolutely feel the opposite way, it's worth it to support ethical businesses and not darken the door of the others. it's not that hard to listen, read and pay attention when you find out about bad business practices. blood diamonds, sweatshops, child labor etc. are all based on our spending habits. there used to be a great website called buyblue.org which made the lists for you. fascinating - Best Buy is liberal and Circuit City is conservative, for example. Costco is blue and Sam's Club is red (being Wal-mart).

"real" coconut water comes inside a coconut and it makes me kind of angry to see this marketed as such.

I guess I am lucky that my neighborhood bodega carries actual "real" coconuts, for probably cheaper than this bottled swill, and will even hack them open with a machete for you. the best part is scooping out the coconut inside after drinking the water - and yes you can chew it, it's not a pill.

sorry to be so cranky but the sheer proliferation of ridiculous drinks full of sugar/syrup and health claims just wears me out bigtime. juice comes in fruits and vegetables, buy a juicer instead of 1000 bottles of crap. you can barely even find 100% juice anymore and when you do, it's a blend of less-expensive juices and 4% whatever you wanted.

my former neighbor used to set barrel fires in the tiny backyard every night and waft the smoke around from 11pm-3am so that my two bedroom would fill with soot. he got progressively crazier - he would hang out in the hallway of our 3-apt building and poke any guys passing by in the neck (roommate, boyfriend etc.) he didn't touch the women but he would yell at us, or run a circular saw constantly so we couldn't hear ourselves think. he would also follow me around the neighborhood and just glare at me. the police wouldn't do anything at first but after I had the fire dept. come a few times, they started taking him to the psych ward. we got him evicted after 6 months of hell.

now my boyfriend's early-20s neighbors think that setting bonfires on their shared roof is a good idea. and weekday all night keg parties.
