I used to live in Colorado and we had miller moths in our pantries. Spearamint gum gets rid of them; just throw an unrapped stick of gum in your flour or wherever they are, and they go away. The gum doesn't affect the flavor of any of your food, either. (I secretly wish we had that problem in Seattle so I could use that trick!)

Back to spices: I have a ton of spices and tea in everything from tiny baggies to 2-lb bags. I desperately need a good solution! Ideally in the form of a hanging basket or a light, wall-mounted spice rack. But I'll take any ideas.

I painted a bank of lockers with normal semi-gloss latex paint. High gloss is fine too. Using a roller is the best way to paint it, and and make sure you sand it all, b/c it looks particularly bad if you miss a spot.

The best place for chowder in Seattle is the Pike Market Chowder in Post Alley. Mmm mmm good! Although, really, the BEST soup is the seafood bisque, I just can't get enough!

Please DON'T donate old sheets and towels to a homeless shelter. It's very important to restore dignity to folks who have lost it all, and without a sense of dignity it's that much harder to get out of the system. Please help by using your own sheets a little bit longer and instead by a new set for a shelter - after coming in out of the cold and chaos it feels unbelievably comforting to settle down onto a good bed. (And speaking as a shelter worker myself - the shelter will probably just toss out the old towels and sheets after you give it to them.)

Thanks for reading my rant about shelter donations :)

When we were kids my friend used to tell me that moss was good for bare feet. Maybe he was right! Either way, we loved it, and I'd LOVE it after a shower! I wonder if there's a way to diy this...

Don't paint it!!! I love the warm tones of natural wood and think any wood that's not particle board looks better without paint. Maybe finish it with a cherry varnish, to give it a nice reddish color? Please don't paint...

But by all means paint the metal part.

It does look cluttered in your entry way, but maybe if you moved it to the other side in that corner and took out the bigger cabinet it would look better.

Don't cover the couch! And keep that middle pillow, so don't do navy, and I was never a fan of tan (or orange) and blue. I'd go with earthy greens or reds.

That is beautiful. I wonder what it looks like from the outside?

I'd get a bright red comfy cushion (maybe to match the red in your rug underneath, or anther color in your living room), maybe a fun fabric, like crushed velvet, and a rounded mini throw to go on top of the chair that matches. Honestly, is it worth trying to re-upholster it? It's already funky; go with that.

I have gotten mattresses from friends in the past, but only close friends I know well and whose houses I am familiar with, and it's mainly been economical reasons. I would never EVER buy a used mattress from someone I didn't know, esp. with bedbugs around. Even used bedframes make me nervous.

Aha! This is what I am looking for: simple, sturdy, storage. I gotta be honest though, I'm not crazy about the white doors, but you could fix it up with some neat decals from IKEA or something. I also wish there wasn't so much room around the edges of the bed; I can just see myself tripping and cutting my leg in the middle of the night in a sleepy toilet run, the blood streaming down my leg and my bleary-eyed atempt to quell the bleeding so it doesn't get on my sheets and probably cleaning it with the wrong thing and finally giving up and falling asleep anyway with my leg wrapped in an old T-shirt I don't think I like anymore with my leg sticking off the side of the bed. But maybe for the nimble-footed it might be perfect.

I love your house! The pillars and rafters are my favorite, and I love the Mission look, and the mix of quilts and old southwestern rugs. It's so beautiful, comforting and cozy. It makes me homesick!

I want to know where you can find those table and chairs in the first place. Maybe they're not right for you, but they're perfect for my place!
