One from Mom and Dad, one from Santa and one small one from the Santa at our cultural association Christmas party, so 3. There will also be a stocking filled with a few $1 items and a candy cane. Our girls will get plenty of other things from family and close friends, so I make at least one of our gifts a non-toy gift (like a book, clothing, blanket or DVD, etc) and hope some of the others are too.

Awesome! My nephew's do this at school (in Japan), and there are some places, like temples and shrines, that also do this (with bamboo, as Jenzoe says).

I have a drop side and am very fond of it. Never had a problem with it malfunctioning with 2 nephews and my daughter. I liked the drop side because I was not one who could put my daughter to bed awake and have her go to sleep - she had to be sleeping first. Also didn't have room for a changing table, so I too used the crib or floor. Later, I was able to put a twin bed next to hers and drop the side - it stuck up enough to keep us in our seperate beds, but close enough that it was easy to get her out for frequent night feedings without me having to get out of bed too. My sister-in-law got a fixed side and didn't have many problems getting her son in and out until the matress had to be moved lower. She is 5' 0", but her husband is near 6' and starting having trouble when her son hit a HUGE growth spurt and needed steps to lay her son down when he was asleep.

I think fixed sides are do-able regardless of your height, but your individual parenting style and family circumstances may require some adjustments and creative solutions along the way.

I would love to NOT open presents, but it seems to be a BIG part of the party in my husband's family. I have tried to not open presents, but the guests complain and keep asking when they are going to be opened.

Unfortunately, the bigger kids feel it is their job to 'help' the birthday child, IE: by opening the presents, holding them up for photos and snatching them away and shoving the next one in the poor birthday child's lap. My daughter is usually too overwhelmed by older children swarming her to even know what is going on, and then she is upset that someone else is making all the decisions for her. She is turning 3 soon and I am agonizing over what to do about it. When I was a kid, we all sat quietly and waited for the birthday kid or his/her mom to handle presents if they were opened at the party.

For those of you opening presents, do you have a method of 'crowd control'?

what does one do when you actually have a passenger? Middle of the backseat sounds good, but it looks like it has to hook to the headrest...which makes it not quite as useful as it could be.

I have received gifts from friends that use gift closest/boxes/whatever. Sometimes it works out well, but not always, although the same is true whether you have a gift closet or not.

Please be mindful that just because the giver likes the gift doesn't necessarily mean the giftee will. All those items that were purchased on sale months ago will no longer be returnable. If the person already has the item or finds it less than desirable or the wrong size, you have just burdened them with junk, not a gift.

The colors aren't too bad, but that twin bed looks way too much like a prison bunk for my taste.

I have a Peg Perego, one of the biggest high chairs out there, as does my sister-in-law. We both got ours used, at a consignment sale, which helps save on the cost. They have wheels, and the wheels lock in place. My daughter was never so industrius as to rock the chair, but if my nephew can't make it move or tip, it isn't going anywhere. So, although I've not tried other chairs, I'd say if none of the DIY tricks work, you might consider a bigger chair if it continues to be a problem for you.

As a side note, my sister used to make her crib move by standing up and shaking the foot end, and "walking" it around the bedroom. The only solution for that was to trap it in place, or take her out before she started moving it.

I saw a posting elsewhere (sorry, can't remember where) that you can find the PB chair inserts on ebay for pretty cheap - last I checked, they were $35, then you can get the slipcover and put it together yourself for 1/2 the price.

In the PI, I had cheese ice cream, which tasted like cheesy popcorn. Down in TX, I had a Guiness Stout ice cream for St. Patrick's Day, which was delicious.

I only buy it if I have a plan to make several items that use it, but otherwise, I use the powdered version.

I totally wash my mushrooms. I used to wipe them with a wet towel, but it took far too long to get them really clean. Plus, I found that it sometimes tears the tender tops of them, so it was just easier to dislodge all the dirt with a quick rinse and rub. I'd never noticed any difference in taste - just an absence of grit.

I don't think my hubby would use it, so it'd be my Compaq.

Well, I like them best as they are! Boring, I know. They are great alongside a traditional Philippino breakfast. I'd also like to try making them with bananas in turon (http://www.opensourcefood.com/people/lealea/recipes/classic-filipino-turon).

this was always a standard project in kindegarten and 1st grade when I was a kid - at least where I grew up. My sister, cousin and I all did this project at least twice in school. The best was when our teacher added a tiny touch of salt (our crackers were unsalted).

Due to pre-existing remodeling, we are lucky enough have two living rooms, side-by-side, one is a designated kid-zone, so we would put it there where our daughter can lounge or play. BTW, she loves kid-sized chairs, so this would be a fantastic addition to her play area.

I agree with "eowes" - each kid is so different. My daughter and nephew are only 8 weeks apart, and couldn't be more different if they tried. We only have a couple of cabinets with latches on them (those with chemicals) and a few plug covers in the most obvious spots. She has never tried to climb a thing, and isn't interested in the outlets or cords, etc. We have gates, but she doesn't try to go up or down the stairs without a parent nearby, while my nephew climbs everything, loves exploring every cabinet and taking things apart. I don't worry too much about the cabinets, as I don't have anything that fancy or expensive in the lower cabinets, and our fridge is a bottom freezer style, so they can't reach it to open it yet! Also, my daughter hasn't mastered the art of opening doors yet, while my nephew has figured out how to remove the baby-proofing and open them. Some kids are easily discouraged by a simple "no," while others have to me removed from something time and again.

I think it's up to you whether you want to wait and see how active/curious your child is about things in your house, or baby proof everything and then cut back on what you don't need.

Oh, I love that shine nursery lamp - it's so much cooler than the character themed ones dominating the stores around here.

Hmm. Guess I'm too cheap. I've just been getting the CDs from the library and importing them into itunes, then I can make my own 'playlist' just exactly like it was on the mixtape. Any CDs the library doesn't own I request through ILL. Granted, I only have a few mix tapes I didn't make myself. But, when I breakout the old roommate's (or high school bff or boyfriend) mixtape, I get the whole CD, so I'm getting extra music exposure to boot! A little more work I guess, but worth it.
