Thanks, mejesster - I'll just have to remember not to leave it sit so long next time.

I LOVE Banana/mango smoothies. I don't like ice in my smoothies though, I feel like it dilutes the flavor. Instead, I freeze the fruit. I keep a bunch of little cartons of various fruits in my freezer (mango, banana, strawberry, melons, pineapple etc) and just pick and choose whichever I'm in the mood for. I posted a recipe on my blog a couple months ago before it got so cold here -

I know you put salt on the cucumbers to absorb the excess water out of them. However, the first (and only!) time I did that for a salad, I ended up with SUPER salty cucumbers - no matter how much I rinsed them, they were almost unbearably salty.

Where did I go wrong?

I'm wondering if very mature plantains cooked in the microwave (to avoid frying) would work...

I also go with the roux. I had to learn how, because condensed soup is non-existent in Lima, Peru. Now that I know how easy it is - and actually more flavorful AND healthier to boot! - I'll never go back.

We have a metal one that we use for squeezing limes - everyone in Peru uses them, because they use limes in just about everything.

I like it so much, I bought a larger one for oranges, but I just don't feel like it works as well for oranges - maybe it's because I'm not strong enough, but it seems to leave a lot of juice in the orange.

My recipe probably isn't any better than any of the others here - but I do have some advice. The more you mix the meat - kneading and working it by hand - the denser the final product will be. Perhaps that can help, whatever recipe you choose?

We found a rosemary bush growing right outside the back yard this past summer. This looks like a great way to use it!

I'm guessing perhaps for photography also? Like when you're wanting to photograph all the ingredients for a recipe together. Otherwise, i don't get it. :/

I'm in the pyrex camp with a 1 cup and a 2 cup, plus I have the regular 'scoop' measures, and also a 1 liter/1 quart plastic measuring 'pitcher' that mostly gets used to brew tea.

My grandma used to make something very similar with bread crumbs, eggplant and cheddar, but with a milk/egg soak instead of broth. It's delicious. This sounds like a perfect way for me to use up leftover bread.

My grandmother made sun tea every single day, sometimes several gallons a day. And my mom made a jar just about every day for a very long time - they always used those big gallon pickle jars with a metal lid. It's just about all we ever drank growing up. I make cold brew, because I'm lazy, and forget to go outside and bring it back in.

Is it dangerous? I dunno - but I'm sure I've had thousands of glasses of the stuff in the last 40 years, as has just about every relative I have; can't remember anyone ever getting sick from it, so I'd say if it's possible, the odds are mighty slim.

I like sandwiches for breakfast - apart from egg/cheese, like several others noted above, a meatloaf sandwich is awesome for breakfast. It's actually my favorite part of having meatloaf. I also like spaghetti sandwiches - butter the bread, heat the spaghetti. Pretty much anything leftover works for me between two slices of bread.

My husband and kids love leftover rice (white or Chinese) with an over easy egg on top.

I just painted my kitchen blue and green - it had so much white tile that it needed really bright colors to spice it up. http://mylifeinperu.com/?p=144

I have a plastic grid type masher. I used it once on potatoes, and I now use it to wash socks by hand in very hot water. (lift and squish, lift and squish)

For potatoes I use a mixer or fork. I'd love to have a zig-zag masher, but haven't seen one.

I cook a lot of stuff in my rice cooker, mainly because 3 of the burners on my stove have stopped working. (I know, right?) Living in Peru, we have rice with almost every meal, and I use just about every night, too. Apart from that, I've made spaghetti sauce, macaroni and cheese, boiled my corn on the cob, made stew, cooked beans and lentils... the list goes on. And I use it to make Peruvian style arroz con pollo, too.
