I had the same issue when I moved to Japan. But I was introduced to the microwave oven -- the Japanese kind. It's slightly larger and has the capabilities to heat food, bake AND broil. I've baked pies and small cakes. You can't roast a turkey but it does the job. It was able to fit on a counter top so maybe you can do some research and see if they offer the same kind of appliance there!

I JUST found out about this guy by accident last weekend while flipping through channels (they had a marathon on Direct TV's Audience channel) LOVE HIM, his designs, his personal loft apartment and I especially love Chewie.

Not that it really makes a huge difference, but since the majority of comments raved about Chewie, I thought I should point out that his dog is an OLDE ENGLISH BULLDOGGE. I know this because I have one too and is just as lazy and adorable and snorty like Chewie is. (PS my 3-yr old OEB needs a BF. ANd um, so do I -hint hint-)

Anyway I love how he uses punches of the color pink. And I love how tacky his room is. That cheesy blanket would probably not work anywhere else. His place is not my fave of his work, but I love what he does on the show. Very edgy, unconventional and his use of RECLAIMED WOOD!

Please do my house in Texas!

Having lived in Japan as an American expat, I've met a lot of women who have worked hard through school, only to give up their whole life (and job) and dedicate it to their husband and/or children. One woman told me her life was like the wheels of a car - it keeps going forward, but it's not going anywhere. No passion any never really developing a sense of independence. So I think Lacine is a GREAT idea. The women can continue working and separate themselves from their dependence from their family. The Japanese LOVE to take classes or any kind of group activity, whether it's learning english or a table tennis league. So the fact that the place offers classes is great too!

I've done Gatorade and Pedialite... but now I've gone a different route. Rather than worrying about having to nurse a hangover the morning after, I now take measures to prevent my hangover. PRE-NATALS. I swear by that stuff. I take it either before I go out for the night or right after I get home. It's loaded with tons of VItamin B ANDD it makes your hair and nails shiny too. And, of course, I make sure to drink plenty of water in between.

When I do get hangovers, I do love fried foods and lots of fatty carbs. Yum.

@fitzowics80 - Oooof! I meant tempeh! TEMPEH! Ha. I love using the Tofurkey marinated tempeh line for a quick meal! You can find all sorts of flavors at Whole Foods. :)

I did a gluten-free elimination diet for three months last year --- on top of already being vegan. People thought I was CRAZY especially since I wasn't celiac (I did it for my back problems). My biggest struggle was feeling full...then I learned to embrace rice more and got creative making simple dishes with vegetables, seitan (gluten-free veggie meat alternative), beans or soy. Also this might be a good opportunity to explored different cuisines, esp the rice-based ones. Thai, Japanese or my fave Vietnamese have tons of GF dishes. As long as you use tamari sauce (or Bragg's Liquid Aminos) that is! Mexican food you can make veggie fajitas with corn tortillas... Spanish food make paella... see, not so hard!

Get creative and have fun!

BRILLIANT idea. I live in Houston so it's a combination of the heat + humidity that I would worry about (sweaty cups!). And I'm really eager to feel one of these cups....the wiggle factor has me really intrigued.

Alternatives to Lemon and Vinegar in a Vegan Diet?

How long are you doing the elimination diet for? I was a migraineuer up until college. After a gazillion tests, therapies and pills (I was taking PREVENTATIVE pills daily -- it was that bad) my neurologist told me to seriously look into my diet. He pointed out that aged cheeses and chocolate were the most common problem. And just like that, I cut it out of my diet completely. It's a lot easier to eliminate food (regardless of how wonderful they taste) when you can associate it with pain. I haven't had a major migraine episode in 12 years. :)

After I eliminated those two foods, I realized it was possible for me to go vegan. I've accidentally eaten the two on separate occasions and let's just say I avoid them like the plague. Ouch.

Can't really give you any advice on citrus alternatives, but I at least wanted to let you know that I can totally sympathize with your pain and your struggles with food sensitivities!

I don't understand why the majority of cheese alternatives out there have casein in it :( It seems like that variety is easier to stomach than the vegan cheese.

And am I the one who's not a huge fan of Daiya? I ordered it at Z Pizza and it just had a slimy consistency when it melts and eating it turned out to be a slimy mess. Maybe they just dumped too much of it on. Next time I'll just go cheese-less. You can never go wrong with a cheese-less pizza with extra veggies!

Grrrrrrrrr...I've been looking for a decent vegan app for my Android phone. I'm a little annoyed that Apple still has superior apps over Android. Also bummed that the Vegan with a Vegeance app costs $10!

Oooh I might try this out. Instead of tofu I might use the Morningstar Chick'n Strips (I heat it up over the skillet first and then shred & chop by hand). The strips are already pre-seasoned so I hope it doesn't ruin the taste. Worth a try though!

LOVELOVELOVE. I usually love more (subtle) splashes of color, but the neutral palette is still so warm, inviting and cozy! So chic! Well done, well done.

Ditto, Careen. Such a disappointment that it didn't make it. I really thought you would at least pull through to the final 4. Your apartment showed ingenuity while the rest were all about bright colors and organizational skills. If only all of us can roll up our sleeves and build loft beds like you can! You were one of my favorites so kudos x100 to you!

I love the wallpaper and the rug, but best when used in the same room together. I think your space is sexy, dark and hip.

I. LOVE. IT. And I love that you're from Houston. I'm trying to guess what part of town you're in based on the view of downtown from your balcony. (Montrose?) I love your choice of artwork. There isn't a specific theme which is great. I'm surprised, though, by your choice of bedspread!

HOLY COW THIS IS AWESOME. I'm still flabbergasted by how you were able to cram all that into a space that's less than 300sf. What I love about your space amongst the rest is that you personally put time and sweat into making this place functional and unique. If only I had the same kind of craftsmanship and creativity as you! (no wonder you're in industrial design....!!!)

And I love how earthy it feels in your space!
