I've been to HK 4 times now, and love it! I recommend going to the city park on Nathan road (Kowloon side of HK). The giant banyan trees are gorgeous and I love to sit and watch the older people exercise, play card games and chat.

The FIRST thing I do whenever I move into a new apartment is to replace those square fixtures with nicer vintage ones from the flea market. I take them with me when I move if they're really incredible, but usually I can find them for a few bucks and I feel like some sort of home decor vigilante by leaving them for the next person, fighting crimes against decor, one apartment light fixture at a time...

I have a similar issue in my new apartment, although it's not quite as narrow. We're going to do the following things:

- Get a great modern runner. I'm thinking of sewing together a bunch of these rugs from IKEA to make a long runner.
http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/60114150
I'm thinking the horizontal stripes will help with the narrowness

- Doing something really dramatic with the lighting. We're thinking multiple paper lanterns in different sizes down the length of the hall. Not necessarily in a row, more random/clustered.

Things we're not able to do but you probably could:
- Paint the walls with a pearlized/metallic paint. It would bounce around a lot of light and just be, you know, special
- As someone else mentioned, paint the door at the end of the hall a great colour. It would be easy to update if you got sick of the colour as well.

I'm on Etsy and have participated in Alchemy (as a creator, not a buyer). So far so good. I'd have to say the key is to make sure all the details are laid out clearly before you begin, and all should go well.

I've used this a couple of times before: Once painted with very metallic silver paint for a tin look, and once painted white to cover the lower half of badly cracked plaster walls with a chair rail. In this case I painted the both wallpaper and the chair rail white. I bought my wallpaper at Home Depot, and I still have some of the original roll left, they're huge! I will be using it for a back splash in my new apartment.

Yup, that's Betsey Johnson herself above the bed, not an 80's art photo. Well, not a RANDOM 80's art photo!

And Curtis, yes, she is all ABOUT being fun, she's in her late 50's (or maybe 60's?) now, and she still does her signature cartwheel down the end of the runway after her shows. She's done this for EVERY runway show she's had! Oh and she still has crazy coloured random hair extensions.

Ok actually I'm a bit surprised her apartment not more over the top than it is. Got to love her for going full force with what she loves!

Argghhhh! IKEA Canada, why do you disappoint me again and again!

Also, why is a couch listed as $699 American and $899 Canadian? Not only are our dollars equal now, but a $200 difference seems excessive even before the massive $ valuation shift.

What about some sort of "salon" style arrangement with a mixture of frames and styles. It seems like he's worried about the pictures looking "lost" on the wall, yet he has a lot of small pictures. Here are a few inspiration pics, feel free to dig through my "art arranging" folder on Flickr:

RE the staggered art issue: I think it comes down to trends in home styling. Methods for hanging are are larger/longer term trends I think. Staggering photos reminds me of something that was popular in the 80's, something my mom USED to do, and even she doesn't do it anymore. I'm not trying to slag your BF, just saying it looks dated, for lack of a better explanation. A lot of things change and look dated, that's just the cycle of style/trends.

And if he doesn't accept that, tell him I own an art gallery and I say "no!" ;)

LA - pompous, not pomp-is

Not that I agree, just commenting on the spelling.

So funny, I have this photo in my inspiration folder and was just looking at it earlier today as we are moving in 2 weeks into an older building with a charming bathroom. It's not NEARLY as stunning as the one above, but this pic inspires me to take what is good (the original black and white tiles) and run with it.

I think the manicure is gross too. I don't think it's very subtle at all. More subtle than red, yes, but they really do not look natural. But I think the soap dispense is great, I hate handsoap!

I'm a fan of #1. The darker "lines" (the spaces between the drawers) balance the dark black seats of the chairs nicely. From far away (ie. small pics) the wood looks to be the nicest on this one as well.

It looks like it's beside the lake actually, with the forest to the left of the house (in the last photo)

Some of the decor is REALLY too bad however (the wolf border in the kitchen...lighting). If the decor/styling had been more simple I would be drooling, but for $150..
