I'm jealous of your hardwood floors and ceiling trim! What would I give for some details like that in my apartment....its wall to wall carpeting. Anyway. The biggest difference in my "blah beige room" was window treatment. I hung a curtain rail and got an awesome hand me down curtain from my mom which I kind of ended up designing the rest of the room around. I painted an accent wall (behind the bed) which I'll have to paint over again when I move out but oh well. I also agree with bedding you like - though if you go for the window treatment choose that first because you can change the bedding but the curtains will probably stay the same.

Meh, I lived in the US equivalent of a 4th floor walk up my last year of student-dom in the UK. It is really not that awful. You do get used to it. And she's living in a small city apartment so its not like she's ever going to be lugging home huge quantities of groceries or anything. Also, advantage: Amazing views. My bedroom window directly faced Edinburgh Castle. I will never, ever forget waking up every morning to that view.

*by doors I meant cabinets, incase that wasn't clear.

I love love love this!! Don't know why I saw it so late. I think the subway tiles are my favourite, I have seen those on a few kitchens in AT and they are definitely going on my wish list for when I finally get to own a house/apartment. Renting is convenient but it really curtails creativity!

If you have a litter box in a small space get the kind which has a cover or figure out a way to aesthetically cover it...and clean it regularly PLEASE!! They stink so badly so quickly, and its unhealthy for a cat to have a dirty litter box.

I have a black lab mix and live in a small 1BR apt. I vacuum once a week minimum, and wipe down all the surfaces daily. I don't know how my dogs hair ends up on every single counter in my apartment, but it does. Thank goodness this has become a lot more manageable since she finished shedding her winter coat.

If you have a balcony/outdoor space, leave the doors open frequently - my dog spends more time on the balcony than she does anywhere else if the weather is nice. Funny thing is if she's in the real outdoors for too long (I often take her to the barn where I ride and to the beach) she starts giving me her "are we going home yet?" look, lol. If you let your dog on furniture make sure you vacuum it regularly and/or have a dog blanket to cover it. Mine has her "chair" so I am vigilant about checking it for dog hair daily.

Older dogs breath smells if you don't clean their teeth regularly or feed them a good diet. If a younger dogs breath is smelling that badly there's a reason for it. I feed my 3 y/o a good diet, give her dental chew thingies, & her breath smells fine.

Final piece of advice - keep their food stored in an airtight container to discourage rodents!

I LOVE this space!!! Most of all I love the pantry doors because they remind me of the barn (horse girl through and through here lol)....what a talented Dad you have! Sorry if I missed this, but where did you get those London Underground and Parisian Metro signs from? I love them!

Like the above, I stocked up on local items I knew I'd miss. It was especially difficult when I left Africa, because I had such limited packing space. Now there are specialty African market wooden sculptures I really wish I'd found some way to lug across two continents and 1 ocean to bring with me.

OMG I want your kitchen. LOVE!! You've done a wonderful job of making a small space seem so light and airy. I'm already getting inspiration from these posts, just wish I had enough guts to enter!
