We have a 4 room apartment and my children are definitely not allowed to go and play in our room. Its true that they are occasionally invited in for a cuddle or a story, especially on a Sunday morning or in order to look in the 'big' mirror, but I draw the line on them using it as one of their play areas. I want to be able to go into my room at night and find it clean and orderly, I don't want to have to worry about them getting white bedding dirty or accidently ruining expensive clothing. I also feel pretty strongly that it is MY personal space and this is especially valuable in such a small living space. I would like to think that, conversely, I am respectful of their space and let them have their toy 'towns' set up for long periods of time without disturbing them, I let them tape their special drawings to the wall and generally arrange the room as they see fit. Its about being respectful of one another. Its a very important lesson in respecting other people's things. Is Your Bedroom Off-Limits to Kids? |

I think that the thing about it is that people tend to like the featured parties when they highlight easy, creative ideas. (I'm thinking of stuff like the spy party when she made a 'laser' obstacle course using red string. So creative and easy and cheap!) This party is beautiful but the mom does say on her blog that she spent MONTHS planning it and obviously spent several hundred dollars on etsy, collecting all the cute details. There is nothing wrong with that, if you have the time and money, but I don't think many people need advice about how to spend loads of cash on a kids party. Thats easy. But where is the inspirational idea in this party? Best Kids Parties: Sock Monkeys My Party |

My girls, 3 and 7, asked for bunkbeds a few months ago and since I was looking for a way to make room for a piano, this seemed like a good way to gain some floor space. So far, so good. No one has fallen out, there has been no fighting over top and bottom bunk (big girl gets the top, little one stays below), and it is amazing how much more room we have now, with one bed out of the way. I would also add a reason for storing it now and bringing it back out when themy are older- my daughters are pretty mild-mannered kids but somehow ALL of our furniture has dings in it! The furniture just gets knocked around, despite all of our efforts to avoid it and I imagine that your gorgeous table would probably suffer the same way. Personally, if I had a piece that I really loved, I would just prefer to keep it in good shape to be able to enjoy for all the years to come. Babyproofing a Noguchi Coffee Table Good Questions |

Magic Erasers are not banned in Europe; they sell them at every grocery store in Paris and I've got a box in my cupboard right now. And I would strongly disagree that a microfiber cloth could take magic marker scribbles off my walls and furniture. I actually love to use them a couple times a year for just a general clean up of the walls and doors where dirty hands have left their mark. It makes the whole room look like its been freshly painted! 10 Kids' Things A Magic Eraser Is Killer At Cleaning |

So funny- I actually have an ENTIRE shelf in my daughter's closet full of giraffe themed gifts that she has received over the course of the last two years that are waiting to be regifted. I'm to the point where I have so many items that I've begun subtlely suggesting to newly pregnant girlfriends that they decorate the nursery in giraffe theme (so I can give it all away in one go). Honestly, what is up with all the giraffes??? Put a Giraffe On It |

I do not have a car, since I live in the city center, so I have the bottom of my stroller filled with weird and wonderful things that come in handy (mittens and hats, kleenexs, small toys, a fleece blanket). I also keep three small see-through pouches in rotation for when we leave the house. They each have a few diapers, one of those small packs of handwipes, a wash cloth, a change of clothes, and a pacifier. If I glance at it and see something missing, I just grab for another or get a replacement for what I see missing if there is time. The small pouch then goes in my purse. I admit to always having a few small snacks stashed in my purse, along with crayons and paper, and I add a fresh bottle/sippy cup as we are getting ready to go. When Dad takes the kids, everything just goes in the bottom of the stroller. Basically, after one kid, I realized that its better to limit what we drag around and, in the case of real disaster, just buy what we need rather than lug around a ginormous bag. Whats the worse that could happen? You end up with an extra bag of diapers (you'll use them up in a week)? Getting Out the Door With Two Kids Good Questions |

I live in Paris and in my opinion those are all big fancy kitchens in big fancy apartments- ie, I don't know anyone with a kitchen that nice! Mine is quite big by Paris standards since I live in a 'recent' building (built after 1955) and I love how efficient it is. I can practically cook an entire meal without taking more than 2 steps. When I am in my mom's typical Midwestern kitchen, I find it exhausting and ridiculous the way I have to run a laps while preparing a meal. Its true that we can't have many gadgets with such a small space, in fact, it took years before we would even commit to a toaster, but with practice it works. And now, most French people I know can't live without their Nespresso coffee maker, instead of filter coffee. 4 Ways Parisian Kitchens Differ From American Kitchens |

In France, they only sell this type of nose-cleaner! I was disgusted when I first saw it, but when you see how well it works, you can't help but be converted. It makes a huge difference for a congested baby. Follow this up with a little saline spray and you have a few hours of easy breathing for your child.

We purposely bought a large, round-cornered coffee table, figuring that it would be perfect for our kids. I didn't realize that banging toys would leave horrible gashes in the finish! We have resigned ourselves to living with a rather beat-up piece of furniture while the kids are small, dreaming of the day when everyone in our house understands the word 'gentle'... also, I've found that my biggest storage problem is toys and my under-crib drawers weren't terribly useful as they were poorly made. The bottom fell out as soon as I put something heavy in (a stack of board books was all it took). But they were also really shallow, which wasn't terribly useful. I ended up taking out the entire drawer unit and replacing them with baskets that were easier to use for toys and books. Cribs with Storage Good Questions |

I used a linen fabric from Colefax and Fowler on the outside of my bumper but I thought that it was too delicate for the inside so I used something called minky polka dot, which is so soft! Now, when my daughter lays down to go to sleep, she pushes her forehead up against it and strokes it with her hand. Without knowing the other colors in teh room, I think that a stripe would like nice, and it is easier to match colors. Otherwise, why not match the background white-ish color and then possibly add a top banding or ribbons that match the red? My bumper has been put through the wash once, just because I figured it ought to get washed but otherwise, it hasn't gotten any dirt on it, so my experience would be that you could use white.

I need two to three weeks notice or I have to say no. If its something that we can reschedule, I don't mind doing that to allow my kids to go to a party but I would never cancel plans that had been made with someone else in order to attend another event. In any case, I've found that once kids are in school, you have to give parents that much notice just so that they can stay on top of things. Its hards to be spontaneous when you are juggling the schedules of a few kids. How Far In Advance Do You Send Invitations? |

I think that this is super useful- most of the moms with kids at my daughter's school work so I see their nannies or maybe the grandparents at school pick-up. The problem is that there are lots of foreigners so communication is not always easy, plus, due to divorce and remarriage, parents don't often have the same name as their kids. How much simpler and quicker would this be when you finally bump into a parent or just want the child to have their parent call. I'm all for it. "Business" Cards for Kids? |

I really truly love this room! Some of the contests impress me with their bright color schemes but seem like they might be too hard to deal with long term.
