There have been points in my life I have been achingly poor.
1. Pay-as-you-go cell phone used sparingly.
2. Public library for entertainment.
3. Cooking in bulk and freezing.
4. Cheap beer and good friends at their homes or mine.
It gets a lot tougher with kids I'd imagine, though.

For underneath the velvet curtains, maybe light-colored, lightweight saris? They would let the light in but maintain some privacy and continue your theme.

I have a v. small kitchen with stainless steel drink buckets from Target.
They hold extra snacks and extra cereal (take advantage of those sales!) and some not-oft-used appliances.
They are effective and nice-looking storage that reflects light.
I also have a small stool so we can reach the contents when needed.

Registered just to quote another great one:
I call it "Kipple."
From P. K. Dick:
"Kipple is useless objects, like junk mail or match folders after you use the last match or gum wrappers or yesterday's homeopape. When nobody's around, kipple reproduces itself ... the entire universe is moving towards a final state of total, absolute kipple-ization."
