Definitely needs a bigger rug to start with. I think the height of the curtains are fine, but the panels themselves need to be much wider so that there's no wall visible between the curtains when they are pulled back and the windows. I would also ditch the accent wall and go for one color. Finally, I'd get some more lighting in there -- a table lamp at least for the white side table and maybe also a floor lamp or overhead lighting for the larger area.

Great job Kara! (Btw, go check out Kara's blog -- A Tale of Two Chihuahuas [not min-pins!] -- it's great!)

I've found it's best to avoid anything at West Elm you have to assemble -- the instructions are bad and things don't quite fit as they should. On the other hand, I've had great luck with the Ready to Assemble line at C&B and highly recommend it.

As for Pottery Barn, their bedding is good, but their linens/towels are awful (I've had tearing, piling and color loss after just one or two washes!) -- so I'd suggest buying your duvet/shams at PB, but splurge on the higher priced towels and bedding at Restoration Hardware.

Also, PB rugs are a good bet for the money, and a big step up from West Elm's or C&B's.

Actually, I'd go with IdeaPaint, which allows you to create a whiteboard/dry-erase surface.

I posted about it here: http://odietamoblog.blogspot.com/2009/05/bright-idea-from-ideapaint.html

I grew up in Texas where you can get a 2500sf. house for under $200k (unless it's in the heart of one of the major cities), so the idea of families living in less than 1000sf. was a rather foreign concept for me.

Tell me why I want to highlight the toilet? If you're looking for an accent color, why not go with colorful walls or linens?

Cute! The fabric is definitely reminiscient of her clothes.

The Shabby Chic for Target line was actually good quality for the price -- though frankly too cutesy for my taste outside a little girls' room. I agree though that part of Shabby Chic's downfall may have been the inherent absurdity in paying a designer premium for anything that could be termed "shabby".

Really lovely, especially the serveware.

I think this looks pretty good for a DIY upholstery job but honestly the self-welting and the french tufting are what really make the chair, I think. I like the fabric choice but it may have been worth it to have this one professionally reupholstered.

If you're attempting a first time reupholstery job, I'd start with a basic dining chair, which can definitely be done well at home with a screw driver and a staple gun.

I know this would involve an extra step, but why not just tape out a headboard in painter's tape and then paint out the headboard.

Also have to wonder if the electrical tape would damage the drywall....

The vase frame in particular is cute, but I agree with AdamWA that these could all probably be DIY.

Who the heck wants blue lighting? It's really unflattering actually -- red/pinks are much better.

AustinSarah2/MadSarah,

I've actually been pretty impressed with the quality of his pieces (though admittedly have not seen the dinnerware in person). I have a couple of his canvas pillows and they're lovely as well as the hippo from his menagerie collection and the soldier from his grand tour line (both of which I adore).

That being said, you can usually find his stuff for less on eBay (or just wait for it to go on sale). I got the hippo off eBay for $100 less than retail and the grand tour soldier for 50% off through his website. It just pays to be patient (and do a little searching).
