I appreciate the point being made that the gendering is loose and tastes will cross over, but do these lists really need to be gendered at all? It seems a bit silly to relate them to male or female when it's really a particular style you're compiling into a list, and making lists by style opens you up to a wider audience and more diverse options.

I'd say embrace the long whiteness, even painting the handrail white, and get one of these:

My mom always puts her finicky plants in a seal-able clear plastic bag after a good watering, and leaves them out of bright direct sunlight. They will usually be good as new when she gets back from 2 weeks away.

Quick two cents on the crate: Murph, who is 6 months old, has just reached the stage where he goes to his kennel on his own, putting himself to bed in the afternoon and at night when he's tired and done with playing with us. It is 100% his space, no one bothers him there, and 9 times out of 10 we don't latch or even close the door because he'll only come out when he's good and ready, 2-3 hours at the least. I'd never have survived potty training without it, and it's a great way to begin establishing that there are ok spots and not ok spots to go to the bathroom.

As far as stuff to have: Both a harness and a collar, harness to be used intermittently as a training tool and restraint, as it's much safer for the little ones, and collar for ID tags. But the biggie is a plan: who feeds, when, who is responsible for getting him outside, what commands and how you reward for good behavior, what's allowed and whats not, what's the puppies schedule and who is responsible for each step. Without the plan, you'll never get a rhythm between you and your puppy. When he and you know the rules and schedule everything gets easier.

I'll second the Dozuki saws, though sometimes you'll break teeth off if you use it heavily.

Husky makes a great multi-screwdriver that ratchets, clicks into a 45 degree driver, and stores all of the tips in a nifty holder in the bottom of the handle.

If you're looking for a multi-tool, splurge on the expensive ones, either Leatherman or Gerber. The cheap ones, especially Kobalt, will break under any kind of heavy usage.

Speed square and a bullet level are musts if you're doing regular DIY projects.

the new Itunes 8 "genius" feature is great for picking a "mood" to work to. just pick the song that works for right now, and it makes you a pandora-esque playlist from your own music

I've never owned a TV and am currently debating getting my first, but I just can't justify the expense. Everything is available online, if not streaming I can download it.

For those of you concerned about missing big events: CNN.com, NFL.com, and many other websites are now streaming live big events like the superbowl and election results and news specials. I saw most of the football I watched this year either live on NFL.com or at the bar with friends.

I'm painting my trim right now, and the semi-gloss coverage is awful. I realize that the darker color I'm covering doesn't help, but I'm on coat number 3.5 and doing three coats on baseboard against carpet is no fun.

I live in a studio, so the lack of smell is awesome, but the limited color choices and the pre-packaged color mixtures make it a really inflexible paint to use. It'll be nice when they have no-VOC dyes that can be measured out for custom colors.

Double edged sword, this project. On the one hand, Make It Right and Global Green, the two organizations building the houses, are making a real effort to provide very small "mini-mortgages" to the homeowners they're offering houses to. Which is great. A friend of mine who's been living in a FEMA trailer in the Lower 9th is getting one for virtually nothing. But the houses are unnecessarily expensive to build in the first place, and more money has been spent on fundraising then most of the project is going to cost. see this for a sense of what their idea of "fundraising" : http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20163895,00.html

Additionally, the architectural options the homeowners have to choose from are limited and resemble none of the historical (circa 1850 to 1900) homes in the "Historical Lower Ninth Ward" because the designs were chosen in an architecture contest of young, mostly modernist architects. So no matter what happens, this project can't hope to recapture the je ne se quoi atmosphere of the neighborhood.
