They are breeding in the drain; running it won't do any good.

I got so frustrated I poured a cup of bleach down the drain. Worked instantly and I only needed to do it once.

It's stressful because you can't pick all the cookware that you may need for the rest of your life. The rest of your life could go a million different ways. Just pick the things that you either need to upgrade or that you think you'll need in the next 2 years. After that, it's up to you to finance your own life.

Yes, I too, would break up with the guy who suggested I get rid of the coffee grinder and brewer.

May I suggest an immersion blender with all the attachments, which will take the place of a blender, small food processor, hand mixer, and probably a few other things I can't think of right now.

I believe your difficulties arise from not having a well-organized laundry room and/or closet and/or consistent routine.

First, you need a laundry hamper for dirty clothes. I find them most useful in the bathroom, but others stick them in their closets. You want this hamper to be located where you and your wife spend the majority of your time taking your clothes off. (Some people strip in their bedrooms, other in the bathroom.)

Second, the dry cleaning basket. I think it most useful to keep this in the laundry area, but again, others keep a bin their closet. The point is, when you take off your clothes and decide it needs to go to the dry cleaners, put it in its proper location--NOT strewn on a bed.

Third, clothes to be ironed. Have a rack in the laundry room where these clothes are hung. If you don't have room for a rack then get into the habit of ironing the clothes the minute they come in.

Robes and nightclothes can stay on the bed, or hung on a hook in the bathroom.

Daily-wear clothes can be hung on a hook in the closet.

Yesterday, I had a nightmare in the early morning hours that I was having breakfast at the Hay-Adams in DC, and they kept delaying my breakfast of french toast, so much so that I had to leave the restaurant because I just couldn't wait any longer. So, I woke up and figured, what the heck, and I made myself french toast for breakfast.

I am supremely grateful that I didn't have a dream today about anything ambitious, like crepes or a breakfast friatta.

I have a question about Julia's recipe, which uses bacon. I don't eat pork. Has anyone ever substituted beef crisp or beef fat, or maybe just extra mushrooms for flavor? Regarding the duck fat, how does that work? Do you chop it up?

Depending upon the size of your shoes and your DIY skills, you could modify one of IKEA's cabinets by recessing it into the wall: http://ikeahacker.blogspot.com/2010/03/recessed-bertby-display-cabinet.html and http://ikeahacker.blogspot.com/2007/11/wall-display-cabinet-for-books.html. A recessed (or mostly recessed) cabinet would save floorspace. And think of the fun you could have with doors!

I think you should make a budget first, because you will need to undertake a remodel if you intend to stay in your house. Your kitchen is faulty in a few ways:
1. There is no stove fan
2. There doesn't appear to be proper lighting over the counters
3. The stove/oven looks like it will be ready to be replaced soon
4. A better layout will improve the functionality

The easiest ways to visually unite a kitchen is to paint the walls.

The best way is to locate their origin. In many cases, they breed in the garbage, so take it out daily, and in the garbage disposal in the sink. I poured some bleach down the sink (not green, I know) and it cleaned everything up for the remainder of the season.

Really fantastic job of keeping the house light, even with all the dark wood.

Do you know if there were once partitions/columns with built-in bookshelves dividing the living and dining rooms?

I, too, love the colors, and thought it was great the way the homeowners echoed the red fireplace with other red accents--it keeps the color scheme looking so cohesive.

...wait, who had the paper route for 5 cents a week?

I love this refrigerator (the looks, anyway), and would seriously consider it, depending upon the energy ratings and whether or not I had a separate freezer. I have seen the ones with the freezer in a separate compartment with its own door on top, but not for sale in the U.S.

I think there is a larger market than what one might think for more European appliances...those that are counter-depth, smaller, etc.

AND, my mother had one of these types of refrigerators growing up; I remember it quite well from my above-mentioned grandmother's apartment. However, they also had a giant external freezer in the mudroom.

So perhaps I should have phrased my question: how useful is an icebox of that size if I don't have an external freezer?

Also, I still wonder about the energy efficiency. SMEG didn't have the best reviews, so I wondered how they fared on the energy side.
