My mother passed away unexpectedly a couple of months after I bought my condo. She saw it twice - once before I bought it because I wanted my parents' opinion, and once after possession when she came over to see it freshly painted (but before I had even moved in). My mom and I were very close and she was always incredibly supportive (as is my dad). She was so excited about my new place and kept telling me, "I really think you are going to be happy there." I still think about that a lot - it means so much to me that she was able to see it. I know I will never live anywhere else again that will be somewhere my mother has been. After 2 1/2 years I still love my little apartment. Mom was always right :) What Do Your Parents Think of Your Home? |

I don't know...for me, fireplaces are about fire. I don't mind stacked logs or a bunch of pillar candles, but using that space to display & store items that have no relevance to a fireplace has never really made much sense to me. If you like the look of white brick fireplaces, why not clad that whole wall in white brick or stone or tile? You could then paint or refinish the black fire box in white or a lighter metal finish if the contrast is too much. How Do I Give Fireplace a More Modern & Inviting Look? Good Questions |

Are you sure those cabinets are a veneer? They look more a like thermofoil to me. There was a time when they did say you couldn't paint over thermofoil, but primers have come a long way, so I don't know if that's still the case. If you really dislike them and don't want to/can't paint over them, what about refacing? Non-Matching Kitchen Cabinets: Brilliant or Tragic? Good Questions |

When I was a kid I collected seashells. My Dad bought me this really great shell at a garage sale, and when he told them I collected seashells, they went inside and came back with a case full of the most amazing shell collection. They were from Europe, so a lot of the shells were unlike anything I've ever come across in North America. They GAVE me the collection - refused to take any money for it. Working for a builder in Calgary, I can say from experience that people in this part of the country are often as conservative in their decor choices as they are in their politics :( Whole lotta brown and beige goin on.
