Those on really tight budgets can look for a reuse center in their area for used building materials at very cheap prices. The Building Materials Resource Center in Boston is one example. The Building Materials Reuse Association has a nationwide directory of local centers.

The Building Materials Resource Center (100 Terrace Street, Roxbury Crossing) has a variety of light fixtures. Most are one of a kind, and all are very affordable. The selection changes daily because all materials are donated. www.bostonbmrc.org

The last time I used my clothes dryer was (strangely enough) last June, when we had a three-week stretch of rainy weather. It was too humid to use my basement clothesline. If it broke, I wouldn't replace it. I'd be hard pressed to part with my dishwasher, though. It vastly improves my quality of life!

Stirring the compost periodically to aerate it is important, and you may need to water it occasionally to get it "cooking" most efficiently. The Boston Building Materials Co-op has an article with composting tips in the most recent newsletter (page 2):

Joymich, the Co-op is open 8-4:30 M-F and Saturdays 9-3. Yes, you can fire away with your questions, and the staff will answer as best they can and refer you to someone else if they can't. You also might be interested in the various Saturday morning workshops scheduled for the spring.

Zinsser makes a product called "Bathroom Ceiling Paint." I used it on my bathroom walls as well as the ceiling, and it has held up wonderfully for 7 or 8 years now. I bought it at Wallpaper City in Roslindale.

Try the Boston Building Materials Co-op. They have two kitchen designers on staff and cabinets are custom ordered. They can do modern or other styles and also refer you to a reputable contractor for installation. 617-442-2262 or http://www.bbmc.com.
